KEARNEY — With the return of winter weather to the state, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol braved the snow and frigid temperatures to respond to crashes and motorists assists.

Cody Thomas, Nebraska State Patrol Public Relations Director, said that troopers in central Nebraska responded to five crashes and had 53 motorists assists.

One of the crashes in central Nebraska resulted in a fatality.

The crash occurred around 5:36 a.m. when a vehicle struck a stationary semi-trailer, which was stationary due to another semi-trailer that had rolled on its side and was blocking both westbound lanes.

The driver of the secondary vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of this deceased driver is being withheld at this time pending notification of the next of kin, according to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.

Statewide, Thomas said that troopers responded to 30 crashes and 115 motorists assisted.

Another publicized accidented occurred near Grenta when one semi-trailer struck the back of another. There were only minor injuries associated with this accident.

With dangerously cold temperatures continuing today, the NSP advises, “If you become stranded, stay in your vehicle and call for help. Don’t risk exposure in these dangerous conditions.”
