KEARNEY — Kearney Public Schools is proud to announce that Kearney High School senior Emma Heacock has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist in the 2025 National Merit® Scholarship Program.

This prestigious recognition places Emma among the nation’s top academic achievers and highlights her dedication to academic excellence.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists, including Emma, who had the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million. Advancing to Finalist status requires meeting rigorous academic standards, submitting a detailed scholarship application, and fulfilling multiple criteria set by the NMSC.

Emma now joins an elite group of students recognized for outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). She will continue in the competition for Merit Scholarships, with approximately half of the Finalists expected to be named National Merit Scholars this spring.

“We are incredibly proud of Emma’s remarkable achievement,” said Jason Mundorf, Superintendent of Kearney Public Schools. “Her commitment to academic excellence and student involvement is a true reflection of the high standards we strive for at Kearney High School. Emma’s success is an inspiration to her peers, a testament to her hard work and dedication, and a reflection of the educational experience provided by incredible teachers, staff, and administration at Kearney High!”

The National Merit Scholarship Program annually recognizes approximately 50,000 high school students, with about 16,000 advancing to Semifinalist status and ultimately 15,000 earning the title of Finalist. From this distinguished group, around 6,870 students will be selected as National Merit Scholars, earning scholarships and the esteemed title of Merit Scholar®.
Emma plans to attend UNL and study biochemistry after graduation.

The Kearney Public Schools community extends its congratulations to Emma Heacock and wishes her continued success as she advances to the final stages of the National Merit Scholarship competition.
