BROKEN BOW — A fire occurred at the power plant in Broken Bow during the morning of Thursday, Feb. 20. Power outages were reported as temperatures plummeted to -20 degrees.
The Custer County Sheriff’s Office was asking residents to stay clear of the area of 8th and South C St.
Due to the power outage, Broken Bow Public Schools closed school.
Custer County Emergency Management reminded residents to only call 911 for emergency purposes, not to report a power outage or ask questions.
The power outage occurred during an Extreme Cold Warning, when the actual air temperature was reported to be -28 degrees at the Broken Bow Municipal Airport at 8 a.m.

10:40AM UPDATE: Broken Bow mayor Rod Sonnichsen has signed an emergency declaration in regards to the explosion.
Two shelters have opened up for those without power or heatat North Park Elementary school at 1135 North H Street and Third City Christian Church at 831 Buffalo Run Road.
The Sandhills Express is also reporting that two city employees were in the power plant when the explosion occured. Both sustained minor injuries and were taken to Melham Medical Center.
