KEARNEY — The Kearney High School Dance Catz have made history by bringing home Kearney High School’s first-ever State Dance Championship, capturing the Class A High Kick title at the state competition.

Their victory reflects months of dedication, discipline, and determination.

The Dance Catz didn’t stop at their championship win—they also secured 5th place in the Hip-Hop Division and were honored with the Academic Excellence Award, boasting an impressive weighted team GPA of 3.83.

Coach Meggie Rusher expressed deep pride in her team’s performance and character:

“These girls showed the heart of champions long before they stepped on that stage yesterday. Yesterday was the result of countless hours of hard work, perseverance, and an unbreakable bond. I couldn’t be more proud of these young ladies! I’ve always believed that success is built on character and culture. This team not only danced with excellence, but they also carried themselves with grace, respect, and humility.
They were intentional every day about creating a positive dance team culture, all while perfecting the sport they love so much. They are champions in every sense of the word. Watching them pour their hearts into every movement and seeing their dreams come true was a moment I’ll never forget. It’s still a little bit surreal.

These athletes, especially the five seniors, have taught me just as much as I’ve taught them. Our seniors are an amazing group of young women and leaders—I would put them up against any other five in the country. This championship belongs to every single member of this team, from the freshmen to the seniors; all sixteen of them believed in each other and in the power of unity, which carried them to their success. They have set a new standard for what it means to be a KHS Dance Cat.

Thank you to our parents for all their love and support along this journey, and the fans who came to support us. It was no surprise Kearney had more fans than any other team there—Bearcat Nation represented so well! A big thank you to the KHS administration for always being supportive of our program.”

The KHS Dance Catz have not only etched their names into the record books with this monumental achievement but also demonstrated that excellence extends beyond the dance floor. Their commitment to academics, sportsmanship, and positive team culture sets a powerful example for future Bearcat athletes.

Congratulations to the KHS Dance Catz—true champions in every sense of the word!
