GRAND ISLAND — The Grand Island Police after investigating after a driver fled a traffic stop and eventually abandoned their vehicle on Tuesday, March 11.

Around 11:00 a.m., an officer with the Grand Island Police Department observed a grey Chevrolet Trailblazer with no front plate and no bumper or fenders westbound on 17th St. from Oak St.

The officer attempted a traffic stop but the Trailblazer, occupied by a male driver, sped up and failed to stop at a stop sign and turned right onto Sycamore St., where it continued at a high rate of speed to 19th St., where it pulled into a driveway on E. 19th St.

The officer activated their overhead lights as the driver exited the driver seat. The driver was ordered to get back in the vehicle, but they did not comply and fled on foot.

The driver would run through a backyard and then double back to the vehicle where they got back in and fled at a high rate of speed.

Officers would later locate the Trailblazer abandoned nearby with a heavy odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

The case is under investigation.
