Sherman County Sheriff says fire north of Loup City was started intentionally

LOUP CITY — The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office says that a fire that occurred on Thursday, March 13 was likely started intentionally and will be investigated.

According to the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office, the Region 26 Emergency Management paged out the Loup City Fire Department for a grass fire near Highway 58 and 797 Road in Sherman County.

The fire traveled quickly into Valley County amid strong winds.

Both the Sherman and Valley County Sheriff’s Offices responded to assist.

“Due to the dangerous weather conditions and high fire danger, multiple Agencies were requested. Multiple resources were immediately dispatched to fight this fire as it was quickly increasing in size. This was in tough terrain and pastures,” per the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office

“This fire also threatened two residences that were evacuated in the immediate line of the fire. This fire has been contained and is being monitored,” per the Sheriff’s Office.

Agencies that assisted on scene included the fire departments from Loup City, Burwell, Boelus, Ashton, Cairo, Broken Bow, Ord, North Loup-Scotia, Arcadia, Chapman, Ravenna, Litchfield, Ansley, Mason, Rockville, Hazard, Comstock, Sargent, Farwell, St. Paul, Elba, St. Libory, Wood River, Phillips and Grand Island Rural Fire.

The fire has an undetermined cause and was likely started intentionally according to the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office. It is being investigated as it could have resulted in personal injury and property damage.
