Hope Harbor food pantry changes policy due to critical supply shortage

GRAND ISLAND — Due to a critical shortage of food pantry supplies and a limited budget, Hope Harbor is adjusting its food pantry policy effective immediately. Households will now receive a food box every three months instead of once a month.

Hope Harbor’s goal is to resume monthly food distributions as soon as more donations are secured. However, with food supplies critically low, both shelter residents and community members relying on our food pantries are being impacted.

The shelter continues to operate at or near capacity due to the ongoing lack of safe, affordable housing. As a result, resources for Transitional Shelter food pantry are stretched beyond current capabilities. The staff are working with their budgets and community partners to continue to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner to shelter residents. Meanwhile, the budget for the Community Assistance food pantry has already been exhausted, just three months into the year. In 2024, Hope Harbor distributed an average of 23 food boxes daily to households in need.

To continue providing food security for families and individuals in the shelter and community, Hope Harbor is asking the community to help restock the pantries by donating non-expired, unopened food items such as:

•     Coffee
•     Sugar
•     Cereal
•     Pasta and pasta sauce
•     Ramen
•     Spaghettis/ravioli
•     Mac & cheese
•     Canned fruit
•     Canned meat
•     Canned vegetables
•     Canned soup
•     Beans and rice
•     Instant potatoes
•     Crackers
•     Applesauce
•     Peanut butter and jelly
•     Bread
•     Oatmeal, pancake mix, and syrup
•     Meal kits/prepackaged goods

Every donation makes an impact to those in need. Items can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, at Hope Harbor’s Service Center (615 W 1st Street). For those unable to donate during these hours, please call (308) 383-4634 to make alternative arrangements.

Together, we can help insure no one in our community goes hungry.
