HASTINGS — There is a Slight Risk for severe weather across parts of central Nebraska, mainly for large hail and severe winds, during the afternoon and evening of Thursday, April 17.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., has issued a Slight Risk, a two out of five, for severe weather across central Nebraska, mainly areas along Interstate 80 and north.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, a favorable environment for severe storms will set up on Thursday afternoon, though storms may be limited in their areal extent.

A cold front passing through the region in the early afternoon will serve as a forcing mechanism to initiate convection. A modest cap due to a strong low-level inversion could limit the number of storms to a degree, with the best potential north of Highway 6.

A few supercells could be possible where a dryline will interact with the cold front given the amount of wind shear that will be in place.

According to NWS Hastings, the primary concerns are hail up to the size of golf balls and 60 mph thunderstorm wind gusts.
