KEARNEY — With a heart full of gratitude and a legacy of kindness, Tracy Schall is retiring after 32 years in education – 24 years with Kearney Public Schools.
Currently serving as the principal of Glenwood Elementary School, Tracy has worn many hats throughout her impressive career—teacher, instructional coach, librarian, and district leader—always with the same guiding principle: compassion first.
Coming from a family of educators, Tracy was inspired by the powerful impact teachers could have. “I saw what a difference they made in the lives of their students,” she shared. “That inspired me to do the same.” Over the years, she’s taught every grade from kindergarten through 12th and held roles in nearly every corner of the district—from teaching high school English in Pleasanton and Petersburg to supporting KPS schools as a librarian and learning coach, and eventually leading Glenwood Elementary for the past six years.
Through all these transitions, her core values never wavered. “You can never be too kind or too patient,” she reflected. “And school—and life—are simply more fun when we get to work together.”
What Tracy cherished most about being a principal was the opportunity to connect with every student, every day. “Building relationships with students and staff has been the most rewarding part of this role,” she said. “I hope they remember me as someone who cared about them and showed compassion and kindness—even in difficult situations.”
Known for her gentle leadership and thoughtful presence, Tracy helped foster a culture at Glenwood that she describes as “a family.” Under her guidance, Glenwood thrived as a small school with a big heart—combining the intimacy of a close-knit community with the resources and support of a Class A district.
As she steps into retirement, Tracy is looking forward to spending more time with her family and finding new ways to stay involved in education and service. “I’m not sure what that will look like yet, but I hope to volunteer at church and support schools and libraries in new ways. We’ll see what opportunities come my way!”
Tracy leaves behind not only a legacy of leadership but also a motto that guided her throughout her journey: “Be the kind of teacher you would want your own child to have.”
Superintendent Jason Mundorf shared his admiration and appreciation for Tracy’s many contributions:
“Tracy Schall’s impact on Kearney Public Schools cannot be measured in years alone—it is measured in lives touched, students inspired, and a culture of care that will continue long after her retirement. Tracy was fantastic in a number of roles in the district and her instructional leadership and versatility in those different roles will be sorely missed. Additionally, her legacy of kindness, connection, and dedication to literacy will leave a lasting imprint on Glenwood and our entire district.”
From her colleagues, students, and families across KPS—thank you, Tracy, for a career spent lifting others, one kind word and one perfectly chosen book at a time. You will be missed, but your influence will be felt for years to come.
