FANS TAKE IN INAGURAL HUSKER GAMES:

A crowd estimated at between 8,000-10,000 fans took in the Husker Games, the alternative to the Red/White Spring Game, Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Along with a limited scrimmage involving backup players, fans saw a 7-on-7 flag football game between Midland’s varsity team and the top players from UNL Intramural Leagues, skills competitions involving a large chunk of Nebraska’s roster, culminating with a wing-eating competition.

The event concluded Nebraska’s spring practices. The Huskers will next gather in June to prepare for fall camp 2025.

HUSKERS SWEEP JAYHAWKS IN DBK’S DEBUT:

Dani Busboom Kelly’s debut as the Huskers’ head volleyball coach was successful as she led Nebraska to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 four-set sweep of Kansas Saturday night at John Cook Arena in Lincoln. The exhibition match was extended to four sets despite the Cornhuskers winning the first three sets.

Rebekah Allick, Andi Jackson and Ryan Hunter each had 11 kills across the four sets to lead the Huskers. After notching four blocks in the first three sets, Nebraska piled up four blocks in the fourth set alone. Campbell Flynn tallied 23 set assists while Bergen Reilly notched 18 for the Huskers.

The Huskers are next in action Saturday, May 3, as Nebraska heads to Ord to take on South Dakota State. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. on KGFW.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL AT MARYLAND, SERIES BEGINS TODAY:

Nebraska baseball lit up Maryland’s pitching staff in a 21-5, seven-inning victory that clinched the series for the Cornhuskers (21-23, 9-12 B1G), two games to one.

Gabe Swansen paced the Husker offense, hitting 4-for-5 with seven RBI, including a grand slam and two doubles. Joshua Overbeek was 3-for-5 with five RBI and a double. Jackson Brockett (2-3) earned the win, allowing two earned runs in five innings.

The win pushes Nebraska into sole possession of 11th place in the Big Ten standing. The top 12 teams are selected for the Big Ten Tournament, which the Huskers won last year.

Nebraska now prepares for a midweek matchup Tuesday against Kansas State at Hawks Field in Lincoln. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

BLUE DEF. WHITE 20-17 IN UNK SPRING GAME:

Quarterback Abram Scholting ran for a late score and completed a fourth down pass to help the Blue team edge the White team, 20-17, in Nebraska Kearney’s annual spring game at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

The game featured a running clock after halftime, each team having one chance to move to the opponent’s 15-yard line to start a drive, no rush on field goals and PAT’s, no kickoffs, no returns on punts, and quarterbacks weren’t “live” unless they wore a green penny.

UNK reports to fall camp on Aug. 1 with the 2025 opener set for Aug. 28 (Thursday) at Wayne State. The Lopers and Wildcats haven’t met on the gridiron since 2011.

ROBINSON, FIDONE DRAFTED; MULTIPLE HUSKERS SIGN UDFAS AFTER NFL DRAFT:

Two Huskers were selected in the final day of the 2025 NFL Draft Saturday in Green Bay. Defensive tackle Ty Robinson was picked by Philadelphia in the fourth round with the 111th pick overall. In the seventh and final round, tight end Thomas Fidone was picked by the Giants with the 219th overall pick.

After the draft, multiple Huskers were picked up in free agency. Linebacker John Bullock and Center Ben Scott were both picked up by the Tampa Bay Bucaneers, while Wide Reciever Isiah Neyor signed with the San Francisco 49ers.

Additionally, the Baltimore Ravens picked up a pair of Huskers, adding Wide Reciever Jahmal Banks and defensive tackle Nash Hutmacher. Finally, safety Isaac Gifford was sign by the Carolina Panthers.

KEARNEY BASEBALL CHAMPIONS, GRAND ISLAND THIRD AT LINCOLN EAST TOURNAMENT:

Kearney won the Lincoln East Tournament over the weekend, picking up a 7-2 win over Creighton Prep in the first round of the tournament, a 3-2 extra innings win over Waverly in the semifinal, and knocking off top-ranked Lincoln East 2-0 in the championship game.

SUPERNOVAS WIN IN FINAL HOME WEEKEND, CAN CLINCH ONE SEED IN PLAYOFFS NEXT WEEKEND:

The Omaha Supernovas swept their final weekend of Pro Volleyball Federation home action against the Columbus Fury on Friday and the Vegas Thrill on Sunday. Next weekend is the regular season finale, and the 19-7 Supernovas can clinch the No. 1 seed in the PVF Championship next week by either an Atlanta loss on Thursday against Indy or by beating Grand Rapids on Friday.

Brooke Nuneviller reached a pair of key milestones Friday night. The Oregon product surpassed 700 points with the Supernovas 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9 marathon win against Columbus.

Outside hitter Ally Batenhorst made her mark with a franchise record .667 hitting percentage and 10 kills in Sunday’s 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 sweep of Vegas. Sunday was Omaha’s league-leading 10th sweep of the season.

CINDRIC GIVES TEAM PENSKE ITS FIRST WIN OF NASCAR SEASON WITH VICTORY AT UNUSUALLY CALM TALLADEGA:

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Austin Cindric celebrated his first win of the season by wearing Talladega’s Superspeedway traditional victory wreath all around the track.

A wreath like he just won the Indianapolis 500.

He thought so, too.

“Feels like I just won the Indy 500,” he said of Sunday’s NASCAR race. “I’m trying to walk on the plane with this.”

Cindric wasn’t even concerned how such a gesture might be received by Team Penske teammate Joey Logano, who raged on his radio after the second stage when Cindric didn’t push him and it allowed Bubba Wallace in a Toyota to win the segment and its valuable bonus points.

“Way to go Austin,” seethed Logano, who used multiple expletives in his anger over his Penske radio. “You just gave it to him. Gave a Toyota a stage win. Nice job. Way to go … put that in the book.”

Ford drivers went 1-2, with Ryan Preece finishing second. But Preece and Logano were disqualified following postrace inspections because of spoiler infractions. Logano had crossed the finish line in fifth.

After the DQ’s, Kyle Larson moved up to second and William Byron third for Hendrick Motorsports. The two Chevrolet drivers pushed Cindric and Preece from the second row rather than pull out of line on the final lap and make a third lane in an attempt to win.

FALCONS SAY DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ULBRICH’S SON WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR PRANK CALL TO SHEDEUR SANDERS:

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons said Sunday that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s son was responsible for a prank call made to NFL draft pick Shedeur Sanders.

The Falcons released a statement saying 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich “unintentionally came across the draft contact phone number for Shedeur Sanders off an open iPad while visiting his parent’s home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.”

Though Jax Ulbrich provided the number, he was sitting beside an unidentified friend who actually made the call to Sanders.

The Falcons said Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the prank until after the fact. They offered “sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family” in their statement, and Jax Ulbrich also posted a public apology on social media.

Shedeur Sanders was perhaps the draft’s biggest story as he had to wait until the fifth round on Saturday before being drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He received a prank call on Friday night, the second day of the draft, while waiting.
