Pitching contest swings way of Bearcats

Owen Waha went 6.1 scoreless, and the defense shined behind him as Kearney High was able to hold off a late surge from Bellevue East.

A dominant pitching performance and early offense propelled the Kearney High Bearcats to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bellevue East on Tuesday night. Starter Waha delivered a gem, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings while striking out six, walking three, and allowing just two hits. The right-hander was especially sharp in the third inning, fanning the side on 12 pitches, setting the tone for Kearney’s defensive effort.

The Bearcats (16-9) struck early, plating both of their runs in the first inning. Bryce Andersen led the charge, going 2-3 with an RBI double, while senior Kole Throckmorton added an RBI double of his own to give Kearney all the offense it would need.

Bellevue East threatened late, putting runners on the corners in the top of the seventh, but Chase Bentz shut the door with a clutch popout to seal the win and earn the save.

With the victory, Waha improved to 2-0 on the season, further solidifying a strong push to finish the regular season strong. The game was a true pitcher’s duel, with both teams combining for just six hits—three apiece—in a contest dominated by defense and timely pitching.

The Bearcats play their third game in just as many days tomorrow as they travel to Lincoln to face the Lincoln Standing Bear (7-13). The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 PM, and coverage on KGFW will start at 4:15 PM.
