KEARNEY — Undeniable and unforgettable, after 37 years of service in education—20 of them as the beloved principal of Central Elementary—Teresa Schnoor is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humor, dedication, and heartfelt impact.
Teresa’s journey began with a love for music. “Being part of my high school band was transformative,” she said. “It inspired me to create that same experience for others.” That inspiration led her to the classroom, where she spent ten years teaching instrumental music to students in Coleridge, Wisner-Pilger, Elm Creek, and Lincoln before stepping into school leadership.
Driven by curiosity and inspired by the talented principals she observed throughout her career, Teresa transitioned into administration, eventually serving as principal for a total of 30 years—10 at Franklin Public Schools and 20 at Central Elementary in Kearney. “I wanted to understand how schools worked at a deeper level and contribute to positive change,” she shared.
Seventeen years were spent with Kearney Public Schools, where she became known for her approachable leadership style and passion for solving problems. “Helping staff and students eliminate barriers to teaching and learning has been incredibly rewarding,” she said. “I’ve loved working through challenges and seeing the growth that comes from them.”
Teresa’s most significant accomplishments have come from collaboration—building strong relationships with talented educators and creating a vibrant school community at Central. “This school has broadened my perspective and enriched my life,” she reflected. “The richness of backgrounds and cultures here creates a truly dynamic learning environment.”
While her work has undoubtedly included challenges—supporting students and families through personal hardships and adapting to the increasing reliance on data—Teresa has faced them with resilience and an open heart. “At times, it’s emotionally heavy, but knowing you’re helping people carry that weight makes all the difference,” she said.
And, of course, there’s been plenty of joy. “Kids are hilarious. The daily laughter and lighthearted moments are something I’ll miss immensely,” she smiled.
As she prepares for retirement, Teresa looks forward to reuniting full-time with her husband after six years of living apart for their careers.
“We’re starting a new chapter together—wish us luck!” she joked. She plans to take her time exploring this new season of life with no immediate commitments but plenty of hope for what’s ahead.
Reflecting on her career, Teresa hopes to be remembered for the spirit she brought to the school community. “I hope my presence brought warmth, humor, and dedication to our shared educational journey,” she said.
Superintendent Jason Mundorf praised her leadership: “Teresa Schnoor has been a steady, positive force at Central Elementary. Teresa is an expert instructional leader, leading Central to national recognition as a school of excellence. Her thoughtful approach to leadership, compassion for students, and commitment to excellence have shaped a culture that celebrates diversity and belonging. She will be missed, but her impact will continue to echo throughout our district.”
To the Central Elementary community, Teresa offers her deepest thanks. “To the staff, students, and families—thank you for enriching my career and making every day meaningful.”
Though her next steps are still unfolding, Teresa’s influence on education and her school community is undeniable—and unforgettable.
