GRAND ISLAND – The Grand Island Public Schools Board of Education approved a memo of understanding May 8 with the YWCA to continue to operate the child care center at the O’Connor Learning Center at 2208 N. Webb Road.

The agreement for the 2025-2026 school year was approved under the consent agenda items. The consent agenda was approved by a 7-0 vote, with Board members Josh Hawley and Eric Garcia Mendez absent.

The YWCA has offered child care services in two classrooms at the O’Connor Learning Center from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Child care will be offered nine months of the year regardless of whether school is in session.

The calendar of operations will correspond to the calendar of the YWCA Child Development Center.

Capacity for the child care center will be 40 children. Services are provided for children who are 3 to 5 years old.

In addition to providing the YWCA sole use of space in classrooms, the YWCA will have shared access to spaces such as the playground, gym, parent room, staff break room, staff workroom, and wellness room.

The school district will provide telephone service, internet, and utilities. It will also provide custodial services to daily clean the YWCA classrooms.

The YWCA will provide their own meals. The YWCA will have access to items in the kitchen including the walk-in cooler, sink, microwave, and counter space.

The YWCA is considered an independent contractor.
