GRAND ISLAND — A suspect was arrested in Grand Island on Thursday, May 15 after they attempted to steal a vehicle while a young child was inside.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers were dispatched to W. North Front St. where a 32-year-old male reported that an unknown male had attempted to take her vehicle while her young child was secured in the back seat.

The value of the vehicle was estimated to be $21,0000.

The male, later identified at Khamis Yaya, was later contacted by officers and when they attempted to detain him Yaya became physically uncooperative.

Officers stated they had to force Yaya into handcuffs and to sit in the backseat of the patrol vehicle.

Yaya was arrested for attempted theft of a motor vehicle – over $5,000 and obstruction of a police officer.
