The eastbound, outside lane of Highway 30 will be closed for road construction between University Drive and 19th Avenue, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
KEARNEY — The City of Kearney, in collaboration with Nielsen Contracting, announces that Phase 2 of the Highway 30 and University Drive-South roundabout project will now begin tonight Friday, May 16, 2025 at midnight.
To minimize conflicts, traffic control and lane shifts will be implemented during the overnight hours when traffic volumes are lower.
Beginning at that time, Highway 30 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, and all traffic will be diverted onto the newly constructed shoofly near the intersection of Highway 30 and University Drive-South. This traffic shift will allow construction to begin on Phase 2 of the
roundabout within the main highway area.
University Drive-South, which has been closed since March, will reopen and be accessible via the shoofly, restoring access to University Village.
Phase 2 is expected to last approximately three months, weather permitting. During this time, turning movements at the intersection of Chancellors Avenue / University Drive-North will be restricted. Traffic approaching Highway 30 from these streets will be limited to right-turns only.
• Eastbound traffic will still be permitted to turn left onto University Drive-North.
• Westbound traffic will not be permitted to turn left onto Chancellors Avenue.
Westbound drivers needing access to University Village or the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center are advised to use the reopened University Drive-South main entrance.
Motorists are urged to slow down and drive with caution due to active construction and workers in the area
