GRAND ISLAND – Mercy Meals of Grand Island needs volunteers Saturday, May 31, to help pack 150,000 meals to help fight world hunger.
People can reserve a spot for a two-hour shift. Volunteers 10 and older are welcome.
The event will occur at Heartland Lutheran High School, 3900 W. Husker Highway.

Meals will be distributed internationally. Locally, meal packages will be given to Hope Harbor and Grand Island Public Schools’ food backpack program, according to Mercy Meals of Grand Island Chairman Kurt Koch. Treasurer of the group is Tony Porter. At-large members are David Kapustka and Gary Wieck.
The last time there was a city-wide packing event was in 2018, Koch said.
Donations to support Mercy Meals of Grand Island with $1 for a $1 match. For every $1 donated to Mercy Meals through Thrivent’s online platform, the Nebraska Region Thrivent Member Network will add up to an additional match of $5,000. To donate, go to: https://bit.ly/DonateMercyMealsGIEvent.
Mercy Meals of Nebraska is a non-profit organization that allows volunteers to package nourishing food that will be delivered by the Orphan Grain Train to children in need throughout the world, according to the Mercy Meals of Grand Island website.
The Mercy Meals food product is made up of four dry ingredients that are easily packaged and need only boiling water to prepare. The food bags are 3-ply for strength and can keep for long periods of time. Each package contains 6 meals at a cost of 15 cents per meal. The food consists of rice, flavoring, soy, and vegetables.
