Dense fog in Kearney during the morning of May, 28, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Nearly all of central Nebraska awoke to find dense fog in place on Wednesday, May 28. An advisory has been issued until 10 a.m. due to the lack of visibility.

According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, a Dense Fog Advisory is in place until at 10 a.m. due to visibility to one quarter of a mile or less.

If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you. Low visibility will make driving conditions hazardous.

Fog forms once evaporation into the air results in supersaturation. If the dewpoint depression is small after sunset, clear skies will cause radiational cooling of the air quickly toward saturation. The dewpoint can increase due to a rain shower, previously saturated soils and irrigation.

Clear skies allow the surface temperature to cool off at a higher rate. If dewpoints are high or the dewpoint depression is low, saturation of the air will occur over night.

Fog requires a mixing action by wind; without wind, dew will appear instead of fog. If the surface is near saturation, a light wind will allow for the layer of air near the surface to remain near saturation. High wind speeds cause a mixing of air at the surface and higher into the atmosphere.
