KEARNEY — Brian Haas, longtime head athletic trainer and physical education teacher at Kearney High School, has been named one of the nation’s Most Valuable Athletic Trainers of the Year by Training & Conditioning magazine.

This prestigious national honor recognizes athletic trainers who exemplify outstanding dedication, leadership, and impact in the field of sports medicine. Haas will be formally recognized at a national awards reception on Wednesday, June 25, in Orlando, Florida.

For more than 17 years, Haas has been a cornerstone of the Kearney High athletic program, earning the trust of coaches, athletes, and parents through his consistent, professional, and compassionate care. Supporting more than 20 sports and hundreds of student-athletes each year, he provides expert treatment, injury prevention, and rehabilitation services that keep Bearcat athletes safe, healthy, and ready to compete.

Widely respected across Nebraska’s athletic community, Haas routinely goes above and beyond his job description—often working weekends, mentoring aspiring athletic trainers, and coordinating care across multiple venues. His calm presence and clear communication have been invaluable during high-pressure moments, including the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Brian is an incredible asset to our athletic department and our entire school community,” said Ryan Hogue, Kearney High Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. “His knowledge, calm demeanor, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of our students make him more than deserving of this national recognition. As someone who has worked closely with Brian for the last seven years, I’ve seen firsthand how well he manages our Athletic Training Room and collaborates with Family Physical Therapy, local doctors, and Dr. May from New West Sports Medicine to ensure our students receive top-quality care.”

In addition to his on-campus responsibilities, Haas plays an important role in developing future professionals. He serves as a clinical preceptor for the University of Nebraska-Kearney’s athletic training program, mentoring students pursuing careers in the field. He also contributes statewide through his involvement with the Nebraska State Athletic Trainers’ Association, where he advocates for improved rural athletic health care and emergency preparedness.

Reflecting on the honor, Haas said, “I am deeply honored to be nominated and selected as one of Training & Conditioning’s 2025 Most Valuable Athletic Trainers of the Year. To be recognized alongside such dedicated professionals is truly humbling. I’m fortunate to work with such incredible athletes, coaches, and colleagues each day. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve in a profession I’m passionate about and to make a positive impact on the lives of student-athletes.”

The Most Valuable Athletic Trainer Award is presented annually by Training & Conditioning to celebrate high school athletic trainers who demonstrate innovation, excellence, and leadership in their work. Haas will join two fellow honorees from across the country at the June 25 ceremony in Orlando.
