GRAND ISLAND — A Grand Island man is facing first degree assault charges after a man severely injured with a broken beer bottle and had to be flown by helicopter to an Omaha hospital.
Francisco Vela, 55, is charged with first degree assault, a Class 2 felony and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, a Class 2 felony.
Vela was arraigned in Hall County Court on Monday, June 23 and his bail was set at 10 percent of $25,000. A preliminary hearing date has been set for July 30.
According to an affidavit submitted into the court records, on Saturday, June 21, officers with the Grand Island Police Department responded to W. 15th St. in reference to a disturbance.
After arriving on scene, the officers found a man who was bleeding from a severe laceration to his arm, blood was observed all along the driveway and he pointed out a male who was responsible for the incident.
The man was identified as Franciso Vela and it was determined Vela and the victim were involved in a verbal argument. As the argument intensified, Vela is alleged to have broken a beer bottle and cut the other man.
The wounded man would eventually have to be transported to Omaha via a medical helicopter for further treatment due to the continuous bleeding on the artery.
Two other witnesses at the scene observed the incident.
Vela was placed under arrest and booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections.
