NEBRASKA — The first human case of West Nile virus in Nebraska this year has been confirmed in the East Central District Health Department, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

While no mosquito pools have tested positive so far in 2025, officials warn that West Nile could still be present in standing water across parks, backyards, and communities statewide.

“Since there is no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile virus, it is important for Nebraskans to take preventive steps to reduce their risk,” said Dr. Sydney Stein, DHHS State Epidemiologist.

Health officials recommend using mosquito repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water around homes. People over age 50 and those with weakened immune systems face the highest risk of serious illness.
