The Kearney Target location at 4800 3rd Ave., (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — Smoke inside the store and a prevalent burning smell caused the Kearney Target location to be briefly evacuated, while the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department investigated during the afternoon of Sunday, June 29.

The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) was dispatched to the store at 1:15 p.m. for the report of a burning smell in the store.

KVFD Fire Chief Aaron Jameson said that a power outage in the north Kearney area caused the backup generator at the Target location to start up.

Nebraska Public Power District reported that the outage impacted 33 customers in and around the 4700 block of 2nd Ave. The outage lasted from 11:42 a.m. to 6:10 p.m.

An issue with the generator caused smoke inside the store and the backup lights to go out.

The store was briefly evacuated and KVFD investigated the issue and isolated it to the back up generator. Jameson said there were no obvious issues and advised Target to contact their electrician.

KVFD was on scene for one hour.
