GRAND ISLAND — While July might be the climatologically warmest month in Nebraska, both Grand Island and Hastings set a new record cool temperature for the date of July 17.
In the wake of a cold front that passed through the region earlier in the week on Tuesday, July 15, temperatures which had been in the 90s were suppressed into the 70s for the next two days.
According to the National Weather Service – Hastings, it only reached 71 degrees at the Grand Island Central Nebraska Regional Airport and 70 degrees at the Hastings Municipal Airport on Thursday, July 17.
Both temperature readings broke previous records-coolest highs for the date. The former Grand Island record was 74 degrees and was set in 1972. The former Hastings record was 71 degrees and was set in 1989 and 1918.
“At Hastings, this was the coolest temperature of any July day in nine years, since it only reach 66 degrees on July 3, 2016,” per NWS Hastings.
