KEARNEY — A Kearney man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail after striking and killing a cyclist during a 2024 accident.
Nathaniel Heckenlively, 40, was charged with motor vehicle homicide, a Class 1 misdemeanor.
Heckenlively pleaded not contest to the charge in June. A no contest plea is neither an admission nor denial of guilt, but the plea is treated the same as a guilty plea.
During sentencing, Buffalo County Judge Gerald R Jorgensen, Jr. ordered Heckenlively to 60 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and his driver’s license to be revoked for one year.
According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Thursday Aug. 1, 2024.
According to preliminary investigation, a bicyclist, a 48-year-old Kearney man and Heckenlively ‘s car were traveling eastbound on East 56th Street, just east of Antelope Avenue about a mile outside the city limits of Kearney.
The car collided with the rear of the bicycle.
The bicyclist died as a result of the crash.
