CAMBRIDGE — A $13.2 million proposed school bond for Cambridge Public Schools to upgrade parts of the school was denied by the district voters during the election that took place on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

There were 482 votes against, 280 votes for, with 762 total votes cast in the mail-in election.

“While these efforts have extended the life of the school, the 1926 portion remains outdated and no longer meets the needs of today’s students and staff,” per the Cambridge school bond website.

“The proposed project for Cambridge Public Schools focuses on enhancing educational spaces while improving overall efficiency. It includes the removal of the 1926 building and replacing it with additions totaling 28,324 square feet,” per the bond website.

The two-story structure would be demolished and replaced with a one-story classroom building and a separate multi-purpose performing arts building.

New facilities would have included three science classrooms, an art room, family and consumer science lab, new office space and other classrooms upgrades. There would have also been an expanded commons area and the performing arts space would have had 476 seat capacity.
