KEARNEY — The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a pancake feed on Saturday, Oct 11.

The event will be held at Fire Station 1, 2211 Ave. A. from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice will be served. All ages are welcome.

The KVFD Ladies Auxiliary will also be hosting their bake sale at the same time.

The event is free will donation, with proceeds benefiting the KVFD. The funds raised during the event go toward fire prevention activities and the purchase of items that are given away by the fire department.

Oct. 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week and since 2020 the KVFD has produced a video that has been shown at area elementary schools. The theme of Fire Prevention week this year focused on the hazards associated with lithium ion batteries.

“The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department is a rather unique organization in the fact that it is comprised of three different separate entities that operate together for the benefit of the citizens in our fire district,” per their website.

The City of Kearney employees 12 full-time and 12 part-time Fire Engineers, a Fire Administrator, an Office Manager, a part-time Secretary.

The Suburban Fire Protection District 1 provides fire protection for Buffalo and Kearney County, excluding the city of Kearney.

KVFD is its own private corporation consisting of the membership and Reserve Company, members retired from firefighting but still assist.

Those interested in joining the KVFD are asked to stop in at Fire Station 1 and fill out an application.
