Kearney Police Department K9 Kuba, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

KEARNEY — The Kearney Police Department officially has a new member, albeit this one goes on four legs. K9 Kuba was sworn into service during the Kearney city council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

KPD Chief Gabe Kowalek said that Kuba is a Dutch Shepard that was born in the Czeck Republic; his handler will be Officer Zach Schwarz.

“Internationally, the Dutch Shepherd is best known for use in law enforcement. Dutch Shepherds are loyal, reliable, alert, watchful, active, independent, intelligent, and intuitive. Obedience and discipline can be achieved with remarkable results,” per the Raad van Beheer Organization.

Kuba will fill the role that had previously been served by K9 Murphy, formerly partnered with Schwarz but retired in March 2025.

The tasks will include drug seizures, building searches, suspect apprehension and public demonstrations.

“We’re excited to have this duo on duty to help keep Kearney safe,” KPD stated.
