HASTINGS — Cooler temperatures will prevail across the area on Tuesday and there will be an increasing chance of widespread rain chances late in the work week.
Widespread stratus clouds are expected to linger across much of central Nebraska through Tuesday. This will result in cooler temperatures across the area, in the 40s and 50s, with the coldest values being north of Interstate 80, according to the National Weather Service – Hastings.
Temperatures will climb back up into the 50s and 60s on Wednesday and Thursday.
The focus of the long range forecast revolves around how a shortwave disturbance will impact the late Thursday and Friday.
The outskirts of this potential system’s precipitation bands could arrived in north central Nebraska as early as Thursday, however guidance has been trending slower with the onset of precipitation.
The overall best chances for precipitation lie Thursday night into Friday, with the better chances south of the Nebraska-Kansas state line.
“Given potentially near freezing temperatures late Thursday night, a few light snow could be mixed into this system on its furthest northern side, especially if timing lags into Friday night, cooler temperatures overnight. No snow accumulation is expected at this time,” per NWS Hastings.
Beyond the precipitation chances, temperatures toward the end of the week will dip a few degrees into the mid-40s and low 50s. Overcast skies with northerly winds transporting cooler air from the north with be the main contributing factors.
Day by day, Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 49 degrees. Winds will be out of the north at 5 to 10 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 59 degrees and winds will be out of the south at 5 to 10 mph. Thursday will se a 20 percent chance of rain afternoon, otherwise conditions will be partly sunny with a high near 56.
Friday will see a 40 percent chance of rain before noon, the high will be near 45 degrees.
Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 55 and Sunday will also be sunny with a high near 55 degrees.
