Kearney Police Department (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)

The Kearney Police Department would like to acknowledge the productive work of the Uniform Patrol Bureau D Shift and the Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB).

On Sunday, Nov. 30, officers responded to an ATM alarm activation at Trius Federal Credit Union, 2915 2nd Avenue. While no suspects were seen on arrival, officers worked with Credit Union staff and reviewed surveillance footage, quickly identifying a suspect vehicle.

Thanks to the staff’s quick response to the scene, officers were able to identify the suspects before they left the area. When officers later contacted the occupants in north Kearney, the driver fled on foot but was apprehended a short distance away.

CIB responded to assist, and three subjects were taken into custody. Charges include attempted theft, possession of burglary tools, and obstructing a police officer.

ATM thefts, also known as “jackpotting”, is a growing trend nationwide. We commend the officers and investigators involved for their quick response, thorough investigation, and successful apprehension of the suspects. Their work helps hold offenders accountable and deters future criminal activity. We encourage the public to report any suspicious activity observed near ATMs.
