Downtown Kearney on the Bricks, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today)
KEARNEY — The City of Kearney reminded downtown businesses to acquire a liquor license before serving alcohol at store events or in connection with larger downtown events.
In a letter to businesses located in the Central Business District (CBD), City Clerk Peggy Eynetich said it had come to her offices attention that alcohol was being served at downtown businesses at store events or in conjunction with larger events.
“The Clerk’s office understands that many businesses are likely not aware that dispensing alcohol requires a Special Designated Liquor License (SDL). Per the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission, alcohol may not be dispended at a public event without an SDL, which must be obtained by a retail liquor license holder or a non-profit organization exempt from federal income tax,” per the City Clerk’s office.
Simply put, if alcohol is being served to the public, the business must obtain an SDL. This includes open houses, grand openings, publicly advertised events and events in public or in an area that is accessible to the public.
“Please note that future complaints will be turned over to the Kearney Police Department or the Nebraska State Patrol. Failure to comply with Nebraska liquor laws can result in criminal charges and or administrative citations for event hosts and attendees,” the City Clerk’s office stated.
SDL information and applications can be found at the City of Kearney’s website by following the Government, City Clerk, Liquor License and Special Designated Liquor License tabs. If you have any questions, contact the Clerk’s office at 308-233-3216.
Nebraska Liquor Control Commission always recommends obtaining an SDL in most circumstances to avoid potential issues. Contact the liquor commission at 402-471-4885 or 402-471-2821 to discuss your event.
