LEXINGTON — A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for parts of central Nebraska on Friday, Jan. 16 due to a combination of low relative humidity and high winds.

The National Weather Service – Hastings has issued a Fire Weather Watch for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect Friday afternoon for the following counties in Nebraska, Dawson, Gosper, Phelps, Furnas and Harlan.

A High Wind Watch has also been issued for much of the area on Friday, with northwest winds at 30 to 40 mph and gusts up to 60 mph possible.

In addition to the winds, relative humidity could drop as low as 20 percent, prompting the concern for fire weather. “Any fire that develops will spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” per NWS Hastings.

“A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings,” NWS Hastings stated.
