GRAND ISLAND — A Grand Island man charged with sexual assault of a child has been sentenced to three years in prison and must register as a sex offender.

Jonathan Cruz-Lopez, 34, had been charged with two counts of third-degree sexual assault of a child, a Class 3A felony and committing intentional child abuse – no injury, a Class 3A felony.

Cruz-Lopez plead no contest to the first count of third-degree sexual assault of a child, while the other two charges were dismissed by the court on the motion of the prosecutor with prejudice.

A no contest plea is neither an admission nor denial of guilt, but the plea is treated the same as a guilty plea.

During the sentencing date on Jan. 20, Judge Patrick Lee sentenced Cruz-Lopez to three years in prison with credit given for 244 days already served. He must also register as a sex offender.

According to an affidavit submitted in court, on Thursday, May 22, officers with the Grand Island Police Department responded to Lincoln Ave. for the report of a sexual assault of a six-year-old girl.

During the investigation officers determined Cruz-Lopez has sexually assaulted the six-year-old while lying in bed with her. It was also found that Cruz-Lopez had also sexually assaulted the girl in 2024 while living in the home.

Cruz-Lopez was arrested and booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections.
