HASTINGS — Winter Weather Advisories have been issued around the Tri-City area in central Nebraska; there is a possibility of one to three inches of snow locally.
Extreme cold was present across the Tri-Cities on Friday morning, with a real air temperature of two below zero and a wind chill of 23 below zero in Kearney at 7:15 a.m.
“The Winter Weather Advisory in effect from noon (on Friday) until 6 a.m. Sunday has been expended north to now include the far southern row of Nebraska counties across south central Nebraska,” per the National Weather Service – Hastings.
National Weather Service – North Platte has issued their own Winter Weather Advisories and includes Custer County.
Light snow was falling in Kearney on Friday morning, but the bulk of the snow is expected Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Travel could be difficult, especially Friday night through Saturday morning.
Snow is expected to be fluffy with winds not too overly strong, with gusts up to 20-25 mph.
Most Nebraska counties are favored to see around one to four inches of snow, with the higher amounts falling near the Nebraska-Kansas state line.
“Slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511,” per NWS Hastings.
In addition to the snow chances, a prolonged period of dangerous cold temperatures and wind chills will be in place across the region through Monday morning. Wind chills of 15 to 30 degrees below zero are expected during the overnight and morning hours each day.
Per NWS Hastings, Sunday morning will be one of the coldest nights of the period.
