HASTINGS — A Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather conditions has been issued for central Nebraska during the afternoon hours of Thursday, March 12.
The National Weather Service in Hastings has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” per NWS Hastings.
Southwest winds are expected to blow around 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, while relative humidity will drop as low as 15 percent in some areas.
“Any fire that develops will spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” per NWS Hastings.
“Despite that dusting of moisture, things are still incredibly dry underneath. The National Weather Service has placed our fire district and many around us in a Red Flag Warning for tomorrow,” the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department stated, “We are still under a Burn Ban that was put into effect weeks ago. That melted snow wasn’t enough to move the needle.”
