KEARNEY — A home on Bison St. northwest of Kearney was substantially damaged by a fire during the evening of Friday, March 13.
Around 7 p.m., the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) was dispatched to the 5000 block of Bison St. for the report of a structure fire. A deputy who arrived on scene said the structure was fully engulfed.
The fire spread from the structure toward a tree line on the property, additional manpower was requested to help fight the fire. Amherst would later be paged to provide mutual aid, which arrived with a tanker and at least two grass rigs.
KVFD Deputy Fire Chief Jason Whalen said the fire caused substantial damage to the home and outbuildings. He noted that several propane bottles were ruptured during the course of the fire and were the source of the explosions that were reported.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and Kearney Police Department were on scene providing traffic control. Dawson Public Power District also responded to the scene.
Whalen said the Nebraska State Fire Marshal was called to the scene and ruled the cause of the fire to be undetermined and accidental.
Whalen said KVFD returned to the scene on Saturday morning to extinguish any remaining hotspots as a precaution.
There were no injuries reported as a cause of the fire.
