KEARNEY — The Kearney Police Department will participate in a national enforcement campaign from April 9–13, 2026, highlighting the dangers of texting and distracted driving.

This annual initiative is a key component of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign, which brings together more than 10,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide to promote safer driving habits.

Stay Focused – Put the Phone Away

The Kearney Police Department and NHTSA urge all drivers to remain alert and keep their phones out of reach while behind the wheel. If you need to send a text or check a message, pull over to a safe location first.

“The only thing your hands should be holding while driving is the steering wheel. If you’re holding your phone, you’re probably going to be holding a ticket during this campaign.” – Cpt. Kevin Thompson

Follow these steps to help ensure a safer driving experience:

  • Pull Over Before You Text – If you need to send or read a message, park in a safe location before using your phone.
  • Use a “Designated Texter” – If you have a passenger, allow them to handle messages or calls for you.
  • Avoid Social Media While Driving – No post, snap, or scroll is worth risking a life.
  • Break the Habit – If you struggle with phone use while driving, activate your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature or place it in the glove box, back seat, or trunk until you reach your destination.

Texting while driving is dangerous and illegal. No message is worth a life.

Remember: Put the Phone Away or Pay – it’s not just a slogan, it’s a call to action.

Participation in this campaign is made possible through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Highway Safety.
