TRAVIS FISHER – SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

FISHER – YOUNG GUYS COMPETING IN DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD:

Defensive Backs coach for the Huskers Travis Fisher joined Sports Nightly on Thursday night and spoke about how the younger guys in the DB room are expected to step up…

Fisher had mentioned there is a four-man rotation at safety currently, and that he sees his new young players as athletic “freaks”.

FISHER – FARMER CONTINUES TO IMPROVE AT SAFETY:

Travis Fisher, Nebraska Defensive Backs coach, spoke about one of the elders in the defensive back room Myles Farmer on Sports Nightly Thursday night, saying there is still room to grow…

Farmer has dealt with injuries over his four years at Nebraska, but has also made some stand out plays with 39 total tackles and 3 interceptions as a Husker.

FISHER – NOA POLA GATES BEGINNING TO STAND OUT:

Travis Fisher joined the Sports Nightly crew on Thursday night and spoke highly of talented defensive back Noa Pola-Gates…

Pola-Gates has been one of the more talked about Huskers since his commitment to Nebraska, but has only seen action on special teams the past few seasons.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL ADDS TO BULLPEN WITH A&M TRANSFER:

The Huskers have added another member to their bullpen with a transfer from Texas A&M.

Will Rizzo announced via Twitter on Thursday that he would be continuing his academic and baseball career with the Huskers. The Woodlands, Texas, native redshirted during his 2022 season with the Aggies. He will have four years of eligibility to use at Nebraska.

Rizzo holds a 3.32 ERA with 19 innings pitched in six games this season.  This also includes 19 strikeouts by the pitcher.

HUSKER T&F’s JOHANSSON TO COMPETE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Nebraska track and field thrower Axelina Johansson will represent Sweden in the shot put at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Friday, July 15.

Johansson qualified by placing second in the Swedish Team Championships in June. The NCAA bronze medalist as a freshman, Johansson enters the meet with a personal best of 60-4 (18.39m). She was named the Big Ten Women’s Outdoor Freshman of the Year. Johansson was a two-time All-American in her freshman season at Nebraska and collected two Big Ten medals in the shot put.

JOSEPH – WEDNESDAY SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

JOSEPH – CULTURE NEEDED A CHANGE IN RECEIVER ROOM:

New Wide Receivers and associate Head Coach Mickey Joseph will be new to the Nebraska sidelines this fall, but after chatting on Sports Nightly last night Joseph said this spring his first goal was to establish a new identity…

Joseph has infused new talent through the transfer portal in additions such as Marcus Washington and Trey Palmer, while also recruiting new faces such as DeColdest Crawford, and keeping a mixture of last year’s Huskers with Alante Brown, Oliver Martin, and Omar Manning.

JOSEPH – DIFFERENT TREY PALMER THAN AT LSU:

Trey Palmer joined the Husker Football team after the hiring of new receivers coach Mickey Joseph. Joseph was asked on Sports Nightly Wednesday night about his former Tiger receiver…

Joseph added the talent at LSU kept Palmer from truly shining on the field, but he does expect the new Husker receiver to make big plays this fall for the Big Red.

JOSEPH – WASHINGTON THE “BULLY” OF THE RECEIVERS:

Along with new faces from recruitment and the transfer portal for the Nebraska receivers room comes Marcus Washington from Texas. Washington joins former teammate Casey Thompson on the Big Red, and receivers coach Mickey Joseph spoke on Wednesday’s Sports Nightly about his new mentality he brought…

Washington had 18 receptions for 277 yards and two scores last year for Texas.

ROYALS BEAT JAYS WITH ABSENT PLAYERS:

Angel Zerpa pitched five solid innings, Bobby Witt Jr. hit a tiebreaking homer and the Kansas City Royals overcame the absence of 10 unvaccinated players to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 on Thursday night.

Nate Eaton homered in his big league debut as the Royals won for the fifth time in six games.

Foreign nationals who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19 are not allowed to enter Canada, save for limited exceptions that require a 14-day quarantine. Unvaccinated baseball players are placed on the restricted list, which means they are not paid and do not accrue major league service time.
