LOPER WOMEN’S HOOPS TO BATTLE IOWA IN EXHIBITION GAME:

The UNK Women’s Basketball team continues to aim for top competition, announcing a pairing against a 2022 NCAA March Madness team in the Big Ten.

The Loper women will travel to Iowa City on October 28 to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in an exhibition contest between the two programs.

The Lopers are coming off another successful season, ending at 24-8 and an appearance in the second round of the D2 NCAA Tournament. UNK returns a strong presence of talent and core from the past few seasons, including Elisa Backes, Maegan Holt, and Klair Kirsch.

Iowa won both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles last season, totaling 24 wins and ascending as high as No. 8 in the national rankings. The Hawkeyes return all five starters, including All-Americans Caitlin Clark. Former Fremont Tiger Taylor McCabe will face old teammate Macy Bryant as McCabe suits up for the Hawkeyes, and Bryant dons the Blue and Gold.

KEARNEY LITTLE LEAGUE FALLS TO KANSAS, ENDS SEASON IN INDIANA:

Despite a state title and win over Gretna, the Kearney Little League suffered back-to-back losses to Wisconsin and Kansas – including a no-hitter to Pittsburg, Kansas – that sent the Kearney Little League team home after two games.

The Kearney squad has appeared in 10 of the last 12 regional tournaments representing Nebraska.

HUSKER FRIDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS – FROST:

FROST – HUSKER OFFENSE WILL SEE BLEND OF FROST/WHIPPLE:

Head Coach for the Huskers Scott Frost spoke after practice on Friday and was asked about his involvement with the Big Red Offense and how Mark Whipple’s new schemes are coming along…

Frost added that he’s excited about the competition at quarterback, but that Texas transfer Casey Thompson has the early lead at the top spot.

FROST – TOP QUARTERBACK SPOT IS THOMPSON’S TO LOSE:

Head Coach for the Nebraska Football team Scott Frost spoke to the media after Friday’s practice and addressed Casey Thompson’s off-season injury and where he stands now in the hunt for the Number one spot behind center…

Thompson transferred from Texas this off-season but has been a full participant in fall practices so far. Other quarterbacks continuing to aim for the top spot as well: Florida State transfer Chubba Purdy, Kearney Catholic’s Heinrich Haarberg, and incumbent Logan Smothers.

FROST – LEADERS ARE SETTING STANDARD WITH HARD WORK:

Nebraska Football Head Coach Scott Frost spoke to the media after Friday’s practice and said he’s happy with his leadership on his team and how they lead by example…

Frost has said previously this off-season at Big Ten Media Days that Edge rusher Garrett Nelson is the best leader he’s had since arriving in Lincoln. Frost and the Huskers continue to prepare for their season opener in Ireland on August 27.

FROST – SPECIAL TEAMS EFFORT IS SIGNIFICANT CHANGE:

Nebraska Football has been cursed at special teams since Scott Frost’s first season at the helm of the Big Red. This off-season, Frost hired a full-time special teams coordinator in Bill Busch who is starting to make a difference already in fall camp…

Busch had echoed those comments earlier last week in regards to effort from offensive and defensive starters who will be major contributors this year on special teams.

LOPER FALL ATHLETICS REPORT TO BEGIN SEASONS TODAY:

Loper fans, get ready. The fall athletics season is just around the corner. Fall athletes are reporting to camp today to begin preparations for the upcoming fall sports seasons.

UNK Football is coming off their best season in recent memory at 10-3, including an appearance in the D2 Playoffs finishing in the second round at Angelo State. The Lopers return talented core pieces such as Harlon Hill trophy runner-up TJ Davis and All-American safety Darius Swanson.

Loper Volleyball sets their sights on an unprecedented 23rd NCAA Appearance this season as the Lopers return a strong core of returning pieces after graduating one of the most successful senior classes in program history. After going 26-7 last season, All-MIAA selections Emersen Cyza, CeCe Beahm, Lauren Tuabenheim and Bailee Sterling aim to move the Lopers up further then their 11th place finish last season.

UNK Women’s Soccer begins a new era with first year head coach Rob Breton at the helm. Breton took over the role in the spring, and begins his tenure with a young Loper squad that features 18 returners and eight newcomers.

HARVICK ENDS RACE DROUGHT WITH WIN AT MICHIGAN:

Kevin Harvick got his groove back, fittingly at one of his favorite tracks.

Harvick ended a 65- race winless drought that lasted nearly two years with his sixth victory at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.

Harvick’s win shakes up the playoff race with just three races remaining in the regular season, leaving little time for drivers to earn a spot in the 16-car postseason, and gives a boost for a veteran that entered the weekend No. 17 in points.
