HUSKER VOLLEYBALL No. 1 IN AVCA PRESEASON POLL:

The Nebraska volleyball team was ranked No. 1 in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll released on Monday.

The Huskers collected 1,538 points in the poll and came in ahead of No. 2 Texas (1,528), No. 3 Wisconsin (1,439), No. 4 Louisville (1,317) and No. 5 Minnesota (1,251). Nebraska got 24 first-place votes, while Texas had the most at 27. Wisconsin received 12.

It marks Nebraska’s 101st week all-time at No. 1 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, the most of any program in the nation. The last time the Huskers were ranked No. 1 to start a season was prior to the 2016 season, and last ranked No. 1 in September 2019.

The Huskers went 26-8 last season and made it to the NCAA Championship match, where they fell 3-2 to Wisconsin. NU ended the year at No. 2 in the poll and returns five starters, including 2021 AVCA All-Americans Madi Kubik and Lexi Rodriguez.

LOPER FOOTBALL RATED FOURTEEN IN COACHES POLL:

The Nebraska-Kearney football team is ranked 14th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 preseason poll.

UNK, which finished 2021 ranked 15th in the AFCA poll, received 318 points. Fellow MIAA members Northwest Missouri State (2nd), Washburn (29th) and Pittsburg State (31st) are also listed in the poll. The Lopers host Pitt State Sept. 8 (Thurs.), visit Washburn Sept. 17 and host Northwest on Oct. 29.

The Lopers held its first scrimmage this past Saturday and will host another this Saturday, Aug. 20. That’ll run from 9-11 a.m. with a “freshmen” scrimmage set for Thursday, Aug. 25 (6-8 p.m.). Each is free and open to the public.

HUSKER FOOTBALL UNVEILS ‘SCORING EXPLOSION’ THROWBACK UNIFORMS:

The 1983 Nebraska football team was nicknamed “The Scoring Explosion,” set several NCAA records and made Tom Osborne’s “go for the win” mentality legendary when they went for the two-point conversion against Miami in the Orange Bowl.

That team now has another honor: 2022 throwback alternate uniforms.

The 2022 edition of Husker football will honor its past with tribute alternates. The uniforms feature an ’80s style mesh red top, the N on the outside of the shoulder, and dual red pipes on the white pants.

No official announcement has been made for which game will have the alternates in use.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL – MONDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS:

COOK – NEW FACES ARE REALLY MAKING NOISE:

Head Coach for Nebraska Volleyball John Cook was asked after Monday’s practice how the freshmen are standing out to him for the Big Red…

Cook added that dual-sport athlete Maggie Mendelsen is really making waves and should see some time with her experience in Team USA Volleyball over the summer.

COOK – HAVE YET TO DETERMINE STARTING LINEUP:

Nebraska Volleyball continues to work towards a similar experience in 2021 after finishing as the national runner-up, falling to Wisconsin in the National Championship match. Head Coach John Cook spoke after Monday’s practice that nothing is set in stone yet to start 2022…

The Huskers bring back a bulk of the roster from last year’s run, as well as fresh transfer faces such as Penn State’s Kaitlyn Hord and rising dual-sport freshman Maggie Mendelson.

RODRIGUEZ – CAN STILL IMPROVE OFF OF FRESHMAN SEASON:

Last year’s national freshman of the year and one of the stars of the Big Ten Lexi Rodriguez is ready to bring the Big Red back to the top this season. She mentioned after Monday’s practice that there is still room to improve…

Rodriguez continued saying she’s excited to see how the new rotation of teammates works for the Huskers in 2022. Nebraska hosts the Red-White scrimmage this Saturday at 6 PM.

‘BAMA, OHIO STATE, GEORGIA TOP AP TOP 25; HUSKERS RECEIVE ONE VOTE:

With two of the best players in the country leading the way — and a championship game loss as motivation — Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll for the second straight season and ninth time overall.

Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, national defensive player of year Will Anderson Jr. and the Crimson Tide received 54 of 63 first-place votes and 1,566 points in the Top 25.

Ohio State is No. 2 with six first-place votes from the media panel and defending national champion Georgia is third with three first-place votes. Clemson is No. 4. Notre Dame rounds out the top five.

The Big Ten had four teams placed in the Top 25: Ohio State (2), Michigan (8), Michigan State (15) and Wisconsin (18). Nebraska received a single vote at No. 25.

SCOTT FROST – HUSKER SATURDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS:

FROST – ONLY MAJOR INJURY IN FALL CAMP COMES TO CRAWFORD:

Head coach for the Huskers Scott Frost addressed the media Saturday morning and gave an injury update from the previous week, saying the team is mostly healthy with one exception…

DeColdest Crawford was one of the prize pickups from the 2022 recruitment cycle for the Huskers. Nebraska still has plenty of talent at receiver with returning experience in Omar Manning, Alante Brown, Oliver Martin and others, along with new talent from the transfer portal such as Trey Palmer and Marcus Washington.

FROST – HUSKERS ARE READY FOR WEEK ZERO:

Head Coach of the Huskers Scott Frost spoke to the media after Saturday’s practice and was asked what he’s happiest to see in the third week of fall camp…

Frost also mentioned that his quarterbacks are continuing to battle for the starting role prior to the trip to Ireland to face Northwestern.

FROST – OFFENSIVE LINE WORK IS EXTRAORDINARY:

Nebraska’s Scott Frost spoke to the media following Saturday’s practice and said his offensive line is working harder than ever…

The Huskers are aiming to replace several starters from last season and would like to cement their lineup prior to heading to Ireland according to Frost.

FROST – OFFENSIVE LINE OUTPUT BETTER THAN ANY PRIOR SEASON:

The Nebraska Football team uses all the technology possible to read the best data to produce the best results for Saturday’s in the fall. Some of that technology is showing off the effort put in by the Huskers Pipeline according to coach Scott Frost…

The Huskers have yet to cement a starting five for their offensive line but will likely name their starters prior to leaving to Ireland next week.

FROST – ERVIN IS GETTING BETTER; RUNNING BACK ROOM IS TALENTED:

Head coach for the Nebraska Football team Scott Frost spoke highly of returning running back Gabe Ervin during Saturday’s practice, after Ervin suffered a torn ACL last season ending his 2021 season early…

Ervin continues to compete with transfer Anthony Grant and returning starter Rahmir Johnson for the number one spot, but each back will likely get regular rotations for the Big Red offense this season.

FROST – TRANSFERS ARE LEARNING QUICKLY:

Head Coach Scott Frost’s Huskers have transformed over the off-season utilizing the transfer portal to its full potential. Frost spoke on how his team’s transfers are more prepared and come with a better edge than before…

The Huskers have transfers at nearly every level of their team for the upcoming season, as the Big Red head overseas next week to begin preparations for Northwestern on August 27.
