HUSKER FOOTBALL TUESDAY PRACTICE COMMENTS:

CHINANDER – ALL DEFENDERS MUST BE ON ‘A’ GAME ALL THE TIME:

Defensive Coordinator for the Huskers Eric Chinander spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice and spoke about how his players need to always be ready for a great day of practice…

The Huskers kick off their season in Ireland on August 27 against Northwestern

CHINANDER – UNDECIDED ON BLACKSHIRTS:

One of the biggest questions of each offseason for the Nebraska defense is when the Blackshirts will be handed out for players. Defensive Coordinator Eric Chinander addressed the question after Tuesday’s practice…

Several returning Blackshirts are likely to renew the coveted practice jersey, while the anticipation awaits for new faces looking to earn their first Blackshirt.

CHINANDER – ISAAC GIFFORD CONTINUES TO IMPROVE:

The Blackshirts linebacker group is the strength of this season’s defensive group. Defensive Coordinator Eric Chinander mentioned after Tuesday’s practice that another name to look for is returning starter Isaac Gifford…

Gifford, the younger brother of former Blackshirt Luke Gifford, could see more time behind Nick Henrich and Luke Reimer, but continues to fend off rising freshman Ernest Hausmann for playing time.

CHINANDER – FARMER HAS GROWN IN LEADERSHIP:

The defensive backfield for Nebraska’s defense has more question marks than answers entering 2022. Defensive Coordinator Eric Chinander spoke highly on the maturity and growth of returning safety Myles Farmer after Tuesday’s practice…

Farmer has been a rotating piece at safety his past few seasons despite suffering a season ending injury in 2020. Farmer currently is the returning leader in interceptions for the Blackshirts.

CHINANDER – DEVIN DREW HAS BEEN AMAZING GETTING READY:

New faces abound on the Blackshirts for the upcoming season for the Huskers defense, and one of the newest bodies on the defensive line showed up just last week as Texas Tech transfer Devin Drew came to Lincoln after clearing his academic eligibility. Defensive Coordinator Eric Chinander said after Tuesday’s practice the coaching staff has been floored by his quick transition…

Drew posted over 50 career tackles in two years at Texas Tech before making the switch to Lincoln this off-season.

CHINANDER – ALL POSITIONS ARE STILL OPEN ON DEFENSE:

Defensive Coordinator Eric Chinander spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice and said competition is still open for all positions on the Blackshirts…

The Huskers return the most experience at linebacker, but new transfers and up-and-comers on the defensive line and backfield could be looking to make their mark in Dublin on August 27.

BATTLE IN THE VAULT MATCHUPS SET FOR HUSKER HOOPS:

Campio Sports announced the matchups for the inaugural Battle in the Vault, which will take place at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

In addition to the Huskers’ contest with Queens University which had been previously announced, Mississippi State will face Drake, while Concordia will host Oklahoma Wesleyan. Start times and broadcast information for all three games will be announced at a later date, although Nebraska will play in the evening.

Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster.com and cannot be purchased through the Nebraska Athletics Ticket office.

TIGER MEETS WITH TOP PLAYERS AGAINST LIV GOLF:

The PGA Tour is in Delaware for the first time and the buzz still surrounded Tiger Woods, even if he didn’t have clubs and wasn’t even at the golf course.

Woods flew to Wilmington on Tuesday for a private meeting of top players to discuss the threat of Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

One person invited to the meeting said it was to get on the same page against LIV Golf, along with taking more ownership in the direction of the PGA Tour.

The meeting was held away from Wilmington Country Club at a hotel, according to another person aware of the details. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan was not invited.

WILLIAMS FAREWELL TOUR SEES SHORT STOP PRIOR TO US OPEN:

The second stop on Serena Williams’ farewell tour was a short one.

The 40-year-old Williams fell to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career, losing 6-4, 6-0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night.

Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down, although she did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tournament.

The Cincinnati event was the second U.S. Open tuneup for Williams, and the next time she takes the court will be at Flushing Meadows.
