UNK FOOTBALL OPENS HOME WITH RANKED MATCHUP AGAINST PITT STATE:

The 11th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney football team faces 29th-ranked Pittsburg State in a key NCAA Division II game tonight at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

This is the first of six home games for the Lopers (1-0) who went 5-0 last year at Foster, the first unbeaten home slate since 2009. UNK is looking for its first win over Pitt (1-0) at home since 1982.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with fireworks set for after the game. Fans not in attendance can follow along via The MIAA Network.

UNK knocked off the mighty and storied Gorillas in each of the last two years in Kansas, 31-26 and 28-17. Last Thursday, UNK used a big fourth quarter to win at Missouri Southern State, 24-7, with Pitt using the big play to down Central Missouri, 21-10, at home.

UNK FOOTBALL – LYNN COMMENTS:

LYNN – LIMITING BIG PLAYS KEY FOR VICTORY:

Head Coach for UNK Football Josh Lynn has prepared his team for another tough contest in the MIAA against Top 30 opponent Pittsburg State. Lynn mentioned that limiting big plays could be the key to a win…

The Lopers ran the ball 61 times last week in the win in Joplin over Missouri Southern and would look to do the same tonight. Kickoff from Ron & Carol Cope Stadium is set for 7 PM.

LYNN – PITT PREVIEW; ONE OF THE BEST IN THE MIAA:

Head Coach for the Loper Football team Josh Lynn broke down what UNK will see tonight in their matchup with conference foe Pittsburg State…

The Lopers and Gorillas kickoff tonight from Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at 7 PM.

KEARNEY HIGH FOOTBALL READY FOR SECOND TRIP TO SEACREST FIELD:

The Kearney High football team has a new buzz to their team after starting the season 2-0 and takes their unblemished mark back to Seacrest Field for the second time in three weeks to battle unbeaten Lincoln North Star.

The Navigators are on the rise having downed Omaha Benson and Lincoln Northeast, and are off to their best start since 2018 under first year head coach James Thompson.

Kearney rattled off a dominant victory at home last weekend, blowing past Fremont with two special teams scores and an interception return for a touchdown.

Kickoff tonight is set from Seacrest Field for 7 PM. The KGFW High School Football Preview Show will get coverage starting at 6 PM with live pregame beginning at 6:30 PM. Austin Jacobsen and Ford Clark will be on the call from Lincoln.

Hear the game on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com.

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL ESCAPES CHI WITH HEART-STOPPING WIN:

Behind career performances from a pair of sophomores, the No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team took over late in Wednesday’s match at No. 17 Creighton to earn a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Bluejays in Omaha in front of an NCAA record crowd.

Whitney Lauenstein had a career-high 25 kills to lead the Huskers, while Lindsay Krause totaled a career-high 16 kills. Lauenstein’s 25 kills were the most by a Husker in a match since Mikaela Foecke in 2018

Nebraska improved to 6-0 with the win, while Creighton fell to 5-2 on the season.

The Huskers are back at home on Saturday as they host Long Beach State, coached by former Husker assistant Tyler Hildebrand, at 3 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL POSTGAME – JOHN COOK:

COOK – GREAT, HISTORIC MATCH FOR VOLLEYBALL:

Nebraska Volleyball Head Coach John Cook was all praise for both Nebraska and Creighton to kick off his postgame appearance after the Huskers edged past a late Creighton rally…

Cook continued in saying there was some to work on for the Huskers, but overall downing a tough Creighton team at the CHI Health Center will help Nebraska in the long run.

COOK – LAUENSTEIN IMPRESSED WITH IMPROVING PERFORMANCE:

Head Coach for Nebraska Volleyball John Cook was impressed from what he saw from Whitney Lauenstein in postgame comments after the win over Creighton…

Lauenstein led the Huskers with a career high 25 kills on the match, the most by any Husker since 2018.

COOK – ROOM TO IMPROVE ON THE BLOCK FOR NEBRASKA:

Head Coach for Nebraska Volleyball John Cook was happy to see the Big Red earn the victory over Creighton on Wednesday night, but added in his postgame thoughts there was still room to improve…

Nebraska also committed more service errors than the Jays and was held without a service ace. The Huskers return home on Saturday to face Long Beach State.

NFL SEASON KICKS OFF WITH SUPER BOWL CHAMP UNDERDOGS:

For nearly seven months, Sean McVay has told the Los Angeles Rams their Super Bowl championship guarantees them nothing in this new season except a banner.

The Rams will unveil that banner Thursday night at SoFi Stadium before they get another reminder of just how little their championship victory on that same field last winter will mean this fall.

The NFL chose Von Miller, Josh Allen, and the powerhouse Buffalo Bills as the Rams’ opponent in their season opener, practically ensuring a difficult start to a season in which they’re widely perceived to have the league’s toughest schedule.

The Rams are Vegas underdogs in their first game since winning their franchise’s second Super Bowl title. In fact, the Bills could send Los Angeles to a place it has never been with McVay — below .500.

Kickoff is set for 7:20 PM tonight.

NEBRASKA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL READY FOR LOADED CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team is set to take on three 2022 NCAA Sweet Sixteen qualifiers during its nine-game home Big Ten schedule at Pinnacle Bank Arena, after the conference announced the Big Red’s 18-game league slate on Wednesday

The Huskers, who finished 24-9 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament before earning a 2022 NCAA Tournament berth, will take on Michigan (Wednesday, Dec. 28, Elite Eight), 2022 Big Ten regular-season co-champion Ohio State (Saturday, Jan. 14, Sweet 16), Maryland (Sunday, Jan. 22, Sweet 16) and Big Ten regular-season and tournament champion Iowa (Sunday, Feb. 18, NCAA 2nd Round) at Pinnacle Bank Arena as part of its loaded conference schedule. Overall, eight of Nebraska’s Big Ten contests will come against teams that won at least one NCAA Tournament game in 2022.

Nebraska, which tied a school record with 16 home victories a year ago, opens Big Ten home action on Wednesday, Dec. 7 against Wisconsin

UNK WOMEN’S GOLF PLACE SECOND, GONZALEZ WINS IN MISSOURI:

The Nebraska Kearney women’s golf team shot a 36-hole team record of 582, super senior Faviola Gonzalez broke her own 36-hole mark with a 141 and then won a playoff to earn medalist honors Wednesday at the Central Region Preview in Blue Springs, Mo.

This early season tournament features some of the top teams in the Central Region and a strong showing helps build a resume for NCAA consideration in the spring.

UNK heads to Hays, Kan., for the MIAA Fall Preview on Sept. 26-27.
