LOPER FOOTBALL TAKES DOWN LAMBERSON, MULES AT HOME:

Redshirt senior quarterback TJ Davis rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries and the Nebraska Kearney defense was strong in the red zone in a 38-6 win over Central Missouri Saturday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

The No. 25/19 Lopers (3-1) beat the Mules (0-4) for a second straight year and for the first time at home since 1973. This was a “Homecoming” of sorts as UCM head coach Josh Lamberson (2015-16) was previously at UNK.

Davis (Colorado Springs) spearheaded an offense that scored 21 points in the first quarter and in a total of eight plays. He had a 21-yard scramble to start things off, capped another fast 80-yard drive with a 14-yard run and then hit redshirt junior receiver Joe Stiffend (Plainfield, Ill.) from 64 yards out on a play where Stiffend was wide open on the right side of the field. For added measure, Davis tacked on a 68-yard scoring scamper early in the second.

Longtime rival Fort Hays State (1-3) comes to town next Saturday at 7 p.m. The Tigers fell to Missouri Southern Saturday night.

UNK VOLLEYBALL TAKES DOWN UCM:

Middle hitters Bailee Sterling and Fallon Stutheit both had career-high kill totals as No. 7 Nebraska Kearney slipped past No. 17 Central Missouri in five sets Saturday evening in Warrensburg, Mo.

With the big road win, the Lopers (15-1, 5-1) avenge two losses to UCM (9-5, 4-1) last year. The two teams will meet later this fall in Kearney.

Sterling (Kearney H.S.) had 22 kills and hit .475 with Stutheit (Johnson) recording 20 kills and having a .500 efficiency.

Rival Fort Hays State visits Tuesday at 6 p.m.

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL PUSHES PAST TOP TEN OHIO STATE IN FIVE SETS:

The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team earned a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday night in front of 8,342 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers moved to 10-1 on the season and 2-0 in Big Ten play. The win snapped a two-game skid against the Buckeyes, who dropped to 5-5 and 1-1 in the Big Ten.

Madi Kubik had a team-high 16 kills to go with nine digs and five blocks. Lindsay Krause added nine kills and a pair of blocks, and Whitney Lauenstein had seven kills with four blocks and a pair of aces.

The Huskers are on the road next weekend as they continue Big Ten play. Nebraska plays at Rutgers on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) and at Maryland on Sunday at Noon (CT).

HUSKER FOOTBALL OPENS AS SLIGHT FAVORITES OVER HOOSIERS:

Nebraska football will return from its bye week as a slight favorite over visiting Indiana, according to early lines from online oddsmakers.

Circa Sports released its early lines on Sunday, and the Huskers are two-point favorites over the visiting Hoosiers. The teams are set for a 6:30 p.m. kick on Saturday that will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

HASTINGS COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONTINUES HOT START WITH HOMECOMING WIN:

The Hastings College football team started fast and then the defense did its job in the fourth quarter as the Broncos defeated Dakota Wesleyan 32-13 for its first Homecoming win since 2017 on Saturday afternoon.

There was a lingering thought back to last year’s homecoming where Jamestown erased an 18-point Bronco lead to upset Hastings but this year, no comeback was going to ruin the 2022 Homecoming.

Hastings finished the game with 389 yards of offense while holding DWU to 363 yards. Hastings improves to 4-1 (3-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 1 as Briar Cliff comes to town with kickoff set for 1:00 pm on Lloyd Wilson Field. This is the first time the football team has been 4-1 since 2017.

LOPER TENNIS WRAP UP FALL IN EDMOND:

The Nebraska Kearney women’s tennis team finished the fall by winning 18 times at the annual ITA Central Regional in Edmond, Okla.

In doubles, UNK saw sophomores Alexis Bernthal (Boulder, Colo.) and Clare Plachy (Lincoln Pius) finished runners up in the “B” main draw with sophomores Narindra Ranaivo (Madagascar) and Masha Hatouka (Belarus) runners up in the “A” consolation bracket.

UNK is now off until February 2023.

UNK SOCCER FALLS TO STRONG SECOND HALF BY BEARCATS:

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats scored four second half goals to down Nebraska Kearney, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in Maryville.

Northwest improves to 5-3-2 (1-2-0) while the Lopers fall to 0-8-2 (-0-2-1).

UNK remains on the road next weekend, traveling to Newman (0-9-1, 0-3-0) and Central Oklahoma (6-1-2, 2-0-1).

NEBRASKA BASEBALL WINS OVER OMAHA TO BEGIN FALL SEASON:

Nebraska began its fall schedule with a 9-1 win at Omaha in a 14-inning game on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers totaled nine runs on 12 hits and an error, while the Mavericks had one run on 10 hits and three errors.

Nebraska returns to action on Friday, Sept. 30 at Kansas. First pitch between the Huskers and Jayhawks is set for 4 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.
