KEARNEY FOOTBALL FACES HOMECOMING MATCHUP WITH ROCKETS:
The Kearney High Football team is ready to get back to their winning ways tonight with a home matchup on Homecoming and Senior night with the winless Lincoln Northeast Rockets.
The Bearcats last win came back at home against North Platte on September 23, and have dropped two straight to Top Ten teams Grand Island and Omaha Westside.
Lincoln Northeast is on a 13 consecutive game losing streak dating back to 2021. The Rockets allow 41 points per contest while only scoring 7 points per game.
Pregame coverage on KGFW begins at 5 PM with the High School Football Preview Show, followed by live pregame at 5:30 PM and kickoff set for 6 PM. A short firework show will begin the ceremonies during pregame, followed by a longer firework show at the conclusion of the contest.
HUSKER VOLLEYBALL BACK AT HOME AGAINST PENN STATE:
The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team will play at home for the first time in 20 days when it hosts No. 14 Penn State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Since beating No. 7 Ohio State on Sept. 24 at the Devaney Center in five sets, the Huskers have won four straight matches on the road – dropping only one set – over the last two weeks. Following Friday’s match, the Huskers will have Saturday off before welcoming Northwestern to the Devaney Center at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Nebraska (14-1, 6-0 Big Ten) is riding a seven-match win streak and is the only Big Ten team without a conference loss after six matches played. The Huskers swept Michigan State and No. 24 Michigan last week on the road.
No. 14 Penn State (14-3, 3-3 Big Ten) went a perfect 11-0 in non-conference play before splitting its first six Big Ten matches. The Nittany Lions own wins over Indiana (3-0), Michigan State (3-1) and Illinois (3-0). They’ve lost to Michigan (0-3), at No. 8 Wisconsin (0-3) and at No. 6 Ohio State (2-3).
STORM SET FOR RIVALRY MATCHUP IN LINCOLN:
The Tri-City Storm is set for tonight’s rivalry matchup against the Lincoln Stars after splitting road games last weekend against the Omaha Lancers and Waterloo Black Hawks.
Tonight’s battle is the first of thirteen in this year’s regular season series between the Storm and the Stars. Tonight’s game will be played at the Ice Box in Lincoln. Puck drop for the contest is scheduled for 7:05pm CT.
LOPER FOOTBALL BACK AT HOME TO BATTLE HORNETS:
It’s another nationally-ranked game for the Nebraska Kearney football team when fast-paced Emporia State visits Ron & Carol Cope Stadium this Saturday afternoon.
Kickoff between the #22/13 Lopers (5-1) and Hornets (4-2) is set for 1 p.m. at Foster Field.
Last year in Kansas UNK rallied from deficits of 14-0 and 21-7 to win 42-35. The Hornets ran 109 offensive plays – most by a Loper opponent in 10 years — and churned out 609 yards but saw four drives end inside the Loper 26-yard line (one interception and three turnovers on downs).
The Blue & Gold lead the all-time series 19-12 and have taken the last two games, both held in Kansas.
UNK is 18-4 dating back to December 2019 and currently leads the MIAA in all four rushing categories.
JOSEPH: BLACKSHIRTS WILL NOT RETURN THIS SEASON:
The Blackshirts won’t be coming back this year.
Nebraska interim coach Mickey Joseph made it official Thursday night on the Huskers Radio Network. The honorary black practice jerseys won’t be in the mix for the final six games of the regular season.
The tradition dates back to 1964, when coach Bob Devaney differentiated the defensive starters by putting them in black practice tops. Nebraska had announced nine Blackshirts to open this season.
The jerseys lasted three games before Joseph removed them within days of taking over as interim coach last month. The decision was justified immediately after, with Oklahoma threatening to break a school opponent record for offensive yards in a game in a 49-14 win. Joseph fired coordinator Erik Chinander the next day and elevated special teams coordinator Bill Busch to run the defense.
The Huskers the last two weeks haven’t allowed a point after halftime in wins over Indiana and Rutgers. They also grabbed four interceptions in that span after corralling two in their first four contests.
HUSKER FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – MICKEY JOSEPH:
JOSEPH – GREAT WEEK PREPARING FOR PURDUE:
Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph opened up his comments after Thursday’s practice saying it was a great week of getting better for the Big Red…
Nebraska is currently listed as eleven point underdogs to the Boilermakers.
JOSEPH – PURDUE’S EXPERIENCE GIVES THEM AN EDGE:
Nebraska Football’s interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph was asked what stands out about Saturday’s opponent in Purdue…
Nebraska will try to keep a high-flying offensive attack from the Boilermakers at bay when battling Purdue Saturday night.
JOSEPH – FOCUS ON ANTHONY GRANT’S WORKLOAD:
One of the offensive bright spots for the Huskers so far has been running back Anthony Grant. Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph said that Grant’s workload has to be managed moving forward…
Grant is currently one of college football’s leading rushers at over 640 yards rushing and 5 scores on the season.
JOSEPH – FIDONE LIKELY DONE FOR SEASON:
Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph was asked by media members on Thursday about the status of young tight end Thomas Fidone…
The former four star recruit suffered his second consecutive knee injury in the off-season after just recovering from a separate injury in 2021.
