HUSKER MEN’S HOOPS WIN SEASON OPENER OVER MAINE:

Sam Griesel’s 22 points led three Huskers in double figures, as Nebraska used a decisive second-half run to put away Maine, 79-66, in the season opener at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Griesel scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half in his Husker debut. Juwan Gary pitched in a double-double with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, while Keisei Tominaga had 19 points off the bench, including 10 during a two-minute first half surge.

The Huskers return to action on Thursday, Nov. 10, as Nebraska hosts Omaha at 7 p.m.

NEBRASKA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOMINATES SEASON OPENER:

Isabelle Bourne led five Huskers in double figures with 21 points as Nebraska rolled to the largest season-opening victory margin in school history with a 100-36 women’s basketball win over Omaha on Monday.

Playing in front of the second-largest season-opening crowd in Husker women’s basketball history with 6,233 on hand at Pinnacle Bank Arena, Nebraska buried 14 three-pointers with all 10 active Huskers sinking at least one long-range shot in the game. While the Huskers got 42 points from beyond the arc, they also got 50 points in the paint

Sophomore Allison Weidner added 19 points and a career-high nine rebounds of her own. Another native Nebraskan, Maddie Krull, pitched in 18 points, including a game-high four three-pointers in her Husker debut

Nebraska returns to action at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday, when the Huskers play host to Houston Christian. Tip time is set for 8 p.m.

LOPERS REMAIN No. 12 IN AVCA COACHES POLL:

Wayne State College remained second in the latest NCAA Division II volleyball rankings, while UNK stayed at No. 12 in the AVCA coaches poll for the second straight week.

Wayne State captured the NSIC regular season title over the weekend. The Wildcats’ lone loss on the season came in five sets at seventh-ranked Southwest Minnesota State.

UNK, which dropped out of the top 10 for the first time this season during last week’s rankings, held strong at No. 12 this week. UNK will open the MIAA Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo., on Thursday with a match against Missouri Western.

CREIGHTON DOWNS ST. THOMAS IN SEASON OPENER; SCHEIERMAN OWNS DOUBLE-DOUBLE:

Arthur Kaluma led three Bluejays in double-figures as No. 9 Creighton opened its 2022-23 season with a 72-60 victory over St. Thomas.

The Bluejays trailed 57-56 with 9:58 left before ending the game on a 14-3 run.

Aurora native Baylor Scheierman, a recent South Dakota State transfer who tested the NBA draft waters in the offseason, recorded a double-double in his first official outing as a Bluejay. Scheierman notched 11 points and 10 boards in his Creighton debut.

RAVENS RUSHING GAME POUNDS SAINTS ON MONDAY NIGHT:

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens didn’t need their full complement of key contributors to stifle the Saints and silence the Superdome.

Kenyan Drake rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Houston had an interception to go with his third straight multiple sack game, and the Ravens beat New Orleans 27-13 on Monday night.

Jackson passed for a touchdown and frustrated New Orleans (3-6) with his mobility, rushing for 82 yards and exhibiting an array of jump cuts and spin moves while helping Baltimore (6-3) win its third straight and remain atop the AFC North, one game ahead of Cincinnati.

REICH OUT AS COLTS HEAD COACH; FORMER COLT SATURDAY NAMED INTERIM:

Frank Reich’s attempt to fix the Indianapolis Colts’ sputtering offense failed, so now owner Jim Irsay is turning to another trusted name — former All-Pro center Jeff Saturday.

The Colts made both announcements about an hour apart Monday, less than 24 hours after one of the worst offensive performances in team history against the New England Patriots.

Irsay said he had grown weary of the team’s ongoing struggles and that he would reevaluate the coaching situation after the end of the season.

It was an out-of-the-box move in the NFL, where interim coaches are usually promoted from within. Saturday will have less than a week to get acquainted with his staff and implement a plan for Sunday’s game at Las Vegas.
