NEBRASKA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TRAVELS TO CREIGHTON FOR SEMESTER’S FIRST TEST:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team hits the road for the first time in 2022-23, renewing its long-standing series with Creighton on Tuesday in Omaha. Tip-off between the No. 22 Huskers (2-0) and No. 20 Bluejays (2-0) at D.J. Sokol Arena is set for 6 p.m.

Nebraska was ranked No. 22 in both the AP and USA Today/WBCA Top 25 preseason rankings, while Creighton opened at No. 21 in both polls. CU moved up to No. 20 in the first regular-season AP Poll released Monday, Nov. 14.

Nebraska has produced an average winning margin of 47.5 points in a pair of wins over unranked teams to open the season, while Creighton has posted a pair of road wins over Summit League powers No. 23 South Dakota State (78-69) and South Dakota (74-51). USD went to the 2022 NCAA Sweet Sixteen.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Creighton 31-16, including a 67-62 win (Nov. 17, 2021) last season in Lincoln. Nebraska improved to 21-3 all-time against CU in Lincoln and snapped a five-game overall series winning streak by the Jays.

Pregame begins at 5:45 PM tonight on KGFW with Matt Coatney on the call from the Huskers Radio Network.

UNK MEN’S BASKETBALL HOSTS MAHATTAN CHRISTIAN:

Despite an 0-2 start to the season, UNK Men’s Basketball aims to keep their hot shooting alive as they take on NAIA’s Manhattan Christian tonight at the Health and Sports Center.

After sinking 15 of 33 three pointers last Friday vs. Bemidji State, UNK went 12 of 29 on Saturday against #7 Minnesota-Duluth.

Tip-off from the HSC is set for 7 PM.

NEBRASKA BASEBALL ANNOUNCES 2023 SCHEDULE:

Head coach Will Bolt announced the 2023 baseball schedule Monday, which features 27 home games at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park for the Huskers.

The schedule includes five 2022 NCAA Tournament participants, including defending national champion Ole Miss. The Huskers take on the reigning national champion in regular-season action for the third time in the last 18 seasons after facing Oregon State in 2019 and Texas in 2006.

Other 2022 NCAA Tournament participants include WCC tournament champion San Diego, Big Ten tournament champion Michigan and at-large selections Vanderbilt and Maryland. The conference portion has NU facing four of last year’s top five Big Ten teams.

Charles Schwab Field in Omaha will be the setting for the Big Ten Tournament for the sixth time, having previously been the site in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022. The 2023 event runs May 24-28, and the tournament champion advances to the NCAA Tournament with the league’s automatic bid.

EAGLES PERFECT SEASON ENDS WITH COMMANDERS LOSS:

An Eagles team that romped toward the first 8-0 start in franchise history played with uncharacteristic sloppiness, failed to hit on the game-breaking plays that had defined their season, and had every flaw exposed in quite an imperfect performance.

The Washington Commanders turned methodical drives into scores and took advantage of turnover-prone Philadelphia, stunning the Eagles 32-21 on Monday night and sending them to their first loss in nine games this season.

Behind Jalen Hurts, the Eagles were the last team in the NFL that could make a run at Miami’s 17-0 mark in 1972 and the lone perfect season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, going 18-0 before a Super Bowl loss.

SUSPECT CAUGHT IN FATAL SHOOTING OF VIRGINIA FOOTBALL PLAYERS:

A University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip, authorities said, setting off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday.

Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills.

Officials got word during a morning news briefing that the suspect, 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., had been arrested.

Ryan identified the three slain students as Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry.

Mike Hollins, a running back on the football team, was in stable condition Monday.

The three young men slain were members of the Virginia football team, journeying through periods of transition in their careers — whether it was bouncing back from a season-ending injury, changing positions on the team or transferring in from another school.

NORTH CAROLINA, GONZAGA ATOP AP TOP 25 MBB POLL:

North Carolina didn’t have a dominating start at No. 1. The Tar Heels open their second week atop the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll with coach Hubert Davis reminding his players it will take time to find a flow like the one that carried them to last year’s NCAA championship game.

UNC (2-0) earned 44 of 63 first-place votes to finish ahead of No. 2 Gonzaga in Monday’s first regular-season AP Top 25, which featured only slight changes from the preseason poll released Oct. 17.

Kansas came in ranked sixth, while Creighton sits at No. 10.
