NEBRASKA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OUTGUNNED BY CREIGHTON:
No. 20 Creighton jumped to a 22-11 first-quarter lead and never looked back, as the No. 22 Nebraska women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 77-51 setback at D.J. SokolArena on Tuesday night.
In the first matchup of top-25 teams in the 48-game history of the Nebraska-Creighton series, Nebraska (2-1) could not get untracked in its first road contest of the season, falling to the Bluejays (3-0) in their home opener in front of a school-record crowd.
Junior guard Jaz Shelley led the Huskers with 14 points, while sophomore center Alexis Markowski added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Huskers return to road action on Saturday, taking on Drake in Des Moines. The Bulldogs are coming off a 92-86 overtime loss to No. 4 Iowa and are receiving votes in the Associated Press Poll. Tip-off between Nebraska and Creighton is set for 2 p.m.
UNK MEN’S BASKETBALL BLOWS PAST MAHATTAN CHRISTIAN:
Super senior forward Darrian Nebeker scored 24 points, one shy of his career-high, and Nebraska Kearney sank 10 second half three pointers to fly by Manhattan Christian (Kan.) College, 89-54, Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center.
This was the home opener for the Lopers (1-2) and an exhibition game for the Thunder (3-2) of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
Eight different players had a triple with sophomore wing Tom Connelly (Denver) at a team-best four.
UNK hosts NAIA Haskell Indian Nations (2-6) Thursday at 7 p.m.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS STAYS CONSISTENT:
Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU held on to the top four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, with Tennessee at No. 5 and LSU at No. 6.
With three of the top six teams and only three weeks left until Selection Sunday, the Southeastern Conference appears well positioned to put two teams in the CFP for the second straight season and third time overall.
Georgia (10-0) and LSU (8-2) have already clinched spots in the SEC title game. Tennessee (9-1) can do no better than 11-1.
Ohio State (10-0) and Michigan (10-0) will finish the regular season against each other the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
No. 7 USC (9-1), the Pac-12′s best and probably last hope to make the final four, is seventh.
LOPER FOOTBALL SEASON ENDS AT 8-3; DAVIS REPEATS AS OPOY:
There will be no postseason for the Lopers this season, as UNK went 8-3 this year, going 5-0 in true road games and receiving votes in the final AFCA Top 25 poll of the regular season. UNK either did not accept a bowl bid or was not invited to one of the two bowl games located in Arkansas or Texas.
The Nebraska Kearney football team has placed 15 on the 2022 All-MIAA team with redshirt senior quarterback TJ Davis repeating as Offensive Player of the Year.
Davis (Colorado Springs) is joined on the first-team offense by senior left guard Hunter Hays (McCook) with redshirt senior safety Darius Swanson (Aurora, Colo.) representing the Lopers on the first-team defense.
Davis joins only two other players in MIAA history to earn repeat Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Next, super senior running back Montrez Jackson (Trenton, Fla.) makes the second-team as an “all-purpose back”. This is his third All-MIAA honor and second time on the second-team (2018). End Tell Spies (Mullen) and corner Gabriel Amegatcher (Romeoville, Ill.) made the second-team defense.
Selected to the third-team are three senior co-captains in outside backer Atoa Fox (San Diego), inside backer Jacey Nutter (Thedford) and punter Hunter Kraus (Sargent). Each earns their second All-MIAA accolade. Finally, named honorable mention are back Damien Cearns (Denver), inside backer Jimmy Harrison (Hobbs, N.M.), end Baylor Hellmuth (Hershey), center Jon Merten (Albion), outside receiver Cody Nelson (Albion) and safety Tre O’Guinn (Peoria, Ariz.). Each is All-MIAA for the first time.
