LINCOLN – The Tri-City Storm dropped a shootout decision to the Lincoln Stars by a final score of 3-2 Saturday night at the Ice Box. Charlie Kinsman and Sebastian Törnqvist each netted a goal in the contest for Tri-City. The Storm was held off of the scoreboard in the extra-round shootout and the team fell to 14-13-0-3 on the season.
Storm goaltender Niklas Erickson and Stars netminder Cameron Whitehead traded saves back and forth during Saturday’s opening period. Tri-City broke through with the game’s first goal with less than three minutes to play in the period. Defenseman Charlie Kinsman netted the first goal of his USHL career to put the Storm in front by one goal. Kinsman’s goal was recorded at 17:19 of the 1st period, and was assisted by Tanner Adams. Tri-City outshot Lincoln 14-13 in the 1st period, and the Storm carried a 1-0 lead into Saturday’s 2nd period.
The lone goal of the middle period was netted by defenseman Cole Crusberg-Roseen. Crusberg-Roseen netted his third goal of the season for the Stars at 12:44 of the 2nd period to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Jack Larrigan and Brennan Ali each collected an assist on the scoring play. Tri-City outshot Lincoln 11-9 during Saturday’s 2nd period. The Storm and the Stars entered the 3rd period in a 1-1 tie.
Sebastian Törnqvist netted a powerplay goal for the Storm at 8:14 of the 3rd period to give Tri-City a one-goal lead. Törnqvist’s goal was his eighth of the season. Mason Marcellus scored his ninth goal of the season at 9:43 of the 3rd period to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. Marcellus’ goal was assisted by Antonio Fernandez and Tanner Ludtke. Each team recorded nine shots on net during the 3rd period, and the game required additional time to determine a winner.
Tri-City outshot Lincoln 7-1 during the five-minute overtime period, and 41-33 overall in the matchup. Saturday’s game required a shootout after each team failed to score in overtime. The only goal of the four-round shootout was scored by Lincoln’s Antonio Fernandez to seal a 3-2 shootout victory.
Niklas Erickson recorded the shootout loss in net for the Storm after making 30 saves on 32 shots. Cameron Whitehead notched the win in goal for the Stars after stopping 39 of the Storm’s 41 shots on goal.
