KEARNEY BASKETBALL SWEEPS SOUTHEAST; HOST COLUMBUS:

A career day by Ben Johnson and an overall dominant performance for the Kearney girls earn the Bearcats a sweep of Lincoln Southeast on Friday night. Full game recaps available online at KGFW.com.

Kearney has less than 24 hours to respond, as both squads host Columbus today at Kearney High School. KGFW’s pregame begins at 3:15 PM for the Kearney girls matchup while the boys contest will follow.

STORM DROP HOME CONTEST TO BLACK HAWKS:

The Tri-City Storm dropped a home game to the Waterloo Black Hawks by a final score of 2-1 Friday night at the Viaero Center. 

Trevor Connelly netted Tri-City’s lone goal in the loss. 

The Storm will return to action tonight in another home matchup against the Black Hawks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm CT. 

 

HUSKER MEN’S HOOPS BATTLE BADGERS:

The Nebraska men’s basketball team returns home for an important matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday afternoon.  Tipoff at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 3 p.m.

Nebraska (11-14, 4-10 Big Ten) ran into a hot-shooting Michigan team in Wednesday’s 93-72 loss to the Wolverines

Wisconsin (14-9, 6-7) needed overtime to pick up a crucial road win with a 79-74 win at Penn State on Wednesday.

 

BEARCATS NAME STUTZMAN AS NEXT SOFTBALL COACH:

Steven Stutzman has been selected as the new Kearney High School Head Softball Coach for the Bearcats.

KHS has had six different coaches over the past four seasons. Stutzman arrives as a former UNK interim Head Coach for Loper Softball, and an Assistant Softball Coach from 2017-2019.

Coach Stutzman also has experience coaching at the high school level with area teams Wood River, Shelton/Gibbon as well as Kearney 5 Points. 

Stutzman is replacing Chelsey Jacobitz, who resigned this year.

 

HUSKER SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH SOUTH DAKOTA STATE:

Courtney Wallace tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Nebraska softball team to a season-opening 8-0 victory in five innings over Lamar Friday morning.

The Nebraska softball team (1-1) dropped game two of the Houston Invitational to South Dakota State, 1-0, on Friday afternoon.

The Huskers return to action on Saturday for day two of the Houston Invitational. NU will take on Lamar starting at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with Houston.

 

NEBRASKA WRESTLING POWERS PAST OHIO STATE:

Five-straight bout victories, including two bonus point wins, powered the Nebraska wrestling team (10-3, 6-1 Big Ten) past No. 4 Ohio State 25-16 on Friday night.

The win marked four-straight conference victories as NU preps for two remaining home duals before post-season competition begins. 

Up next, the Huskers return home for a matchup with No. 23 Rutgers on Sunday, Feb. 10.
