HUSKER MEN READY FOR TOP 25 SHOWDOWN IN NEW JERSEY:
The Nebraska men’s basketball team wraps up a stretch of four games in 10 days on Tuesday night as the Huskers travel to Rutgers. Tipoff for the Valentine’s Night matchup in Piscataway is slated for 7 p.m.
Nebraska (12-14, 5-10 Big Ten) overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to stun Wisconsin, 73-63, in overtime on Sunday. In that game, the Huskers outscored the Badgers 45-18 over the final 16:30 of regulation and in overtime.
Rutgers (16-9, 8-6) entered last week in second place in the Big Ten race but comes into Tuesday’s game riding a two-game losing streak after a 69-60 loss at Illinois.
NEBRASKA SOFTBALL’S WALLACE EARNS BIG TEN PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Senior right-hander Courtney Wallace was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. This marks Wallace’s first career pitcher-of-the-week honor.
Wallace was honored after posting a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and three shutouts at the Houston Invitational last weekend. She opened the series with a one-hit shutout over Lamar, helping the Huskers to an 8-0 five-inning victory. Against Houston, Wallace held the Cougars to five hits while striking out five in NU’s 7-0 win. In the final game of the weekend, Wallace blanked previously unbeaten Virginia, leading the Big Red to a 2-0 victory.
Wallace is the first Husker to be named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week in nearly seven years, as Cassie McClure was the last Husker to be the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week when she took home the honor on April 15, 2016.
LOPER SOFTBALL WINS ONE IN FOUR AT COLORADO SPRINGS:
Senior catcher Katie Gosker hit a Grand Slam and senior third baseman Avery Wood also drove in four runs as Nebraska Kearney outlasted Colorado-Colorado Springs, 12-7, Monday night in Colorado.
The Lopers (4-4) salvaged the last of a four-game series with the Mountain Lions (3-6). UCCS took Monday’s first game by a 12-8 score.
UNK heads to Oklahoma City this weekend for the Raising Canes Invitational.
MICHIGAN STATE CANCELS ATHLETICS FOR 48 HOURS AFTER CAMPUS SHOOTING:
Michigan State University announced that athletic events and other campus activities including classes were canceled for 48 hours in the wake of a campus shooting Monday night.
The Spartans men’s basketball team was set to host Minnesota on Wednesday, and the women’s team was set to visit Purdue.
At 8:40 p.m. ET, an alert was posted online along with a shelter-in-place order stating that shots were fired at Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. Another shooting at a second location was later reported, including “multiple reported injuries.”
MSU Police confirmed three people were killed, while five injured people were transported to the hospital and are in critical condition.
CHIEFS SUPER BOWL PARADE SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY:
The plans were drawn up for a parade if the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII.
Following a 10-point comeback, the Chiefs won their third Super Bowl title in franchise history, a thrilling 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The parade will kick off at 12 p.m. and last approximately 1.5 hours.
A rally will begin at approximately 1:45 p.m. in front of Union Station and the National WWI Museum and Memorial north lawn, lasting about one hour, according to the Kansas City Sports Commission.
SUPER BOWL AVERAGES 113 MILLION VIEWERS; 3rd MOST WATCHED IN HISTORY:
Fox was hoping the matchup of two top teams in the Super Bowl and a close game would lead to a record night.
Even though Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles came down to a field goal with 8 seconds remaining, Fox fell just short of its goal.
The Chiefs’ rally to defeat the Eagles 38-35 is on pace to become the third most-watched television show in history, with an estimated 113 million people watching, according to preliminary numbers released Monday.
The 2015 game between New England and Seattle on NBC holds the record at 114,442,000 viewers (not including streaming), followed by Super Bowl 51 in 2017 on Fox between Atlanta and New England (113,668,000).
