KEARNEY BASKETBALL HEADS TO SOUTHWEST TO WRAP REGULAR SEASON:

The Bearcat basketball teams wrap up the regular season at Lincoln Southwest tonight, hoping to claim one last victory to move up in Power Point rankings to improve their district chances and postseason matchups. The games are being played tonight after being moved from yesterday due to extensive snowfall in Lincoln on Thursday.

The Kearney girls begin the doubleheader with KGFW’s pregame starting at 5:30 PM with tip-off set for 5:45. The Bearcat boys contest will follow.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL ANNOUNCES SPRING MATCH AT CENTRAL CITY:

The Nebraska volleyball team will play its 2023 Spring Match presented by FNBO against Wichita State at the new Bison Activity Dome in Central City on Saturday, April 29.

Tickets will go on sale to the public in person only at the main entrance of the Central City Performing Arts Center (2815 17th Avenue) at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 10

A select number of reserved courtside seats will be for sale ($27), while most of the tickets for sale will be general admission ($12) and standing room only ($12)

The Bison Activity Dome, with a capacity of 2,098, opened in December 2022 and is home to Central City High School athletics. This will be the Huskers’ first trip to Central City and will be the eighth different town in Nebraska to host the spring volleyball match.

 

LOPER WOMEN’S HOOPS MOVES PAST MISSOURI SOUTHERN WITH LATE HEROICS:

Redshirt junior forward Shiloh McCool made a left-handed layup with four seconds left to help No. 10 Nebraska Kearney get past No. 29 Missouri Southern State, 58-56, Thursday night in Joplin.

Reigning MIAA Player of the Year Lacy Stokes had a chance to force overtime but her jumper in the lane, contested by super senior forward Brooke Carlson (Elkhorn), hit the back of the iron at the buzzer.

UNK (25-3, 18-2) wins a 12th straight game with six of those coming by five points or less. On the year, the first place Lopers are 6-3 in contests decided by six points or less.

This marks the 10th season in program history with at least 25 victories.

Another tough test awaits Saturday at Pittsburg State. The Gorillas (20-5, 15-4) are now 10-2 at home after a 76-66 decision over Fort Hays State Thursday.

 

UNK MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPPED BY LIONS THREE-POINT SHOOTING:

The Missouri Southern State Lions sunk 17 three pointers to defeat Nebraska Kearney, 86-59, Thursday night in Joplin.

MSSU improves to 16-9 (12-7) and wins a third straight home game. They are in sole possession of sixth place in the MIAA and take the season series from the Lopers.

UNK (5-20, 3-16) beat Pitt State (6-19, 3-16) earlier this year, 63-61. The Gorillas fell Thursday to Fort Hays State, 71-49.

 

HUSKER BASEBALL BEGINS SEASON TAKING ON SAN DIEGO:

Nebraska opens the 2023 campaign on Friday, Feb. 17 at Fowler Park in San Diego, with the first of four games against the San Diego Toreros. First pitch of the season opener is set for 8 p.m. CT.

The teams continue the series on Saturday and Sunday, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. CT and 3 p.m. CT, respectively. The four-game series wraps up on Monday at 2 p.m. CT.

Through four games, the all-time series between the Huskers and Toreros is locked at 2-2.

KGFW will have coverage on Saturday and Monday for Nebraska Baseball. 

 

NEBRASKA BASEBALL TRIO RECEIVES ALL CONFERENCE PRESEASON RECOGNITION:

Nebraska’s Emmett Olson, Max Anderson and Brice Matthews each claimed spots on the Big Ten Preseason Honors List, announced by the conference on Thursday.

Olson, a second-team All-Big Ten selection last season, went 3-3 with a 2.86 ERA and a save in 19 appearances, including eight starts in 2022.

Anderson, a junior infielder, batted .299 with a team-high 12 doubles and 10 home runs last season, while also leading the Huskers with 45 RBI and 47 runs as a sophomore.

Matthews, a junior infielder, appeared in 45 games as a sophomore last season, making 44 starts for the Huskers.

The Big Ten also released its preseason coaches’ poll on Thursday. Nebraska is picked to finish fifth in the conference, behind Maryland, Rutgers, Iowa and Illinois.

 

NEBRASKA SOFTBALL DROP OPENING CONTESTS OF CLEARWATER INVITE:

The Husker Softball team dropped the opening contests of the Clearwater Invitational in Florida on Thursday.

The Nebraska softball team dropped game one of the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational to No. 5 Oklahoma State (5-1) in Clearwater, Fla. The Huskers were held to one-hit as the Cowgirls claimed the 10-0 victory in five innings. 

The Huskers (4-3) fell to No. 2 UCLA in the second game of the day. The Bruins (8-0) claimed the 8-0 victory over the Huskers in six innings.

Nebraska returns to action Friday, Feb. 17 to face No. 8 Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. (CT).

 

LOPER T&F TUNE UP FOR FINAL WEEKEND OF REGULAR SEASON:

The Nebraska Kearney track and field team has its final home indoor meet this Friday with the annual Loper Tune Up.

The small, non-team scoring meet will also feature Nebraska Wesleyan and a few other student-athletes from area schools.

Field events begin at 3 p.m. with running starting at 5:15 and wrapping about 6:00.
