HUSKER FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE COMMENTS:

RHULE – WORKING ON THE DETAILS:

Head Coach for Nebraska Football Matt Rhule addressed the media on Monday morning as the team nears the conclusion of winter conditioning and spoke about some of the insights he’s gathered from the Big Red…

Nebraska has not made a bowl game since 2016 and is hoping to achieve a postseason berth in Rhule’s first season after he was fired from the Carolina Panthers.

RHULE – NOT MANY I’M ‘NOT HAPPY’ WITH:

Matt Rhule, first year Nebraska Football Head Coach, spoke to the media on Monday morning and said so far he’s only seen positives from the Huskers in winter conditioning…

The Huskers are still well over the scholarship limit heading into spring practices, as the NCAA only allows 85 scholarship athletes to be on the team at one time – Nebraska was last tallied around 100.

RHULE – FIDONE LOOKS HEALTHY, ATHLETIC:

Matt Rhule spoke to the media on Monday morning and was asked what his impressions of tight end Thomas Fidone has been in the early stages of the off-season program…

Fidone had suffered two ACL tears over his two seasons in Lincoln, but has seen some game action in his first year.

LOPER WOMEN FACE ROUND THREE WITH PITTSBURG STATE ON FRIDAY IN NCAA TOURNAMENT:

The Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team will face Pittsburg State in an NCAA Tournament first round game Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minn.

Game times for the Central Regional are now set with the UNK/PSU winner playing Saturday at 5 p.m. The championship game will be Monday, March 13, at 7 p.m.

UNK (28-4) has beaten Minnesota-Duluth in each of the past two NCAA tourneys. The Lopers lost at Central Missouri in the 2021 Central Regional final (six team regionals due to COVID) and then lost to Missouri Western in the second round last March in Hays, Kan.

Fans not making the 10-hour trek North can watch the game for free via The NSIC Network or follow along with live stats.

HUSKER FRESHMAN EARNS BIG TEN HONOR:

Nebraska freshman Jamarques Lawrence was honored Monday afternoon, as he was selected as the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career.

Lawrence, a 6-foot-3 guard from Plainfield, N.J., averaged 15.0 points on 63 percent shooting, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in two games last week.  He set or tied season highs in points (15), field goals made (seven), assists (four) and 3-pointers (five) in helping NU to a 1-1 record.

He is the first Husker to receive either Big Ten weekly award this season and is NU’s first freshman honored since Bryce McGowens won the award eight times in the 2021-22 season.

HUSKER HOOPS TO HEAD TO SPAIN THIS SUMMER:

Nebrasketball is heading to Spain this summer for a nine-day trip beginning in late July.

The trip is scheduled from July 28 to Aug. 7, and the Huskers will visit Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona while playing three games against teams from Spain. Some of the off-court highlights of this summer’s trip will include touring the city of Toledo, visiting the Royal Palace in Madrid, taking in the world-famous beaches of Valencia, visiting La Sagrada Familia and a guided tour of Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona.

NCAA programs are allowed to take foreign trips once every four years and this will be Nebraska basketball’s first foreign trip since going to Italy. It will be the second time NU has traveled to Spain, as the Huskers also went there in 2015.

GIRLS STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS:

Class C1 featured upset ready Adams Central as the Patriots ended runner-up to now four time consecutive champions North Bend Central.

In Class C2, Pender earned a 45-42 win in the championship, while GACC placed third over Crofton.

D1 had Centura winning their first ever girls state basketball crown, downing Hastings St. Cecilia 44-38. Ravenna fell to Cedar Catholic for fourth place.

Finally in Class D2, Falls City Sacred Heart edged out Wynot 33-32. Shelton claimed third place with a 48-43 win over Humphrey St. Francis.

HUSKER MEN SWEEP HAWKEYES; DOWN IOWA ON SENIOR NIGHT:

Nebraska men’s basketball had no business emerging the victor Sunday afternoon in Iowa City.

Iowa reeled in 21 offensive rebounds and turned those into 31 second chance points. The Hawkeyes added 21 points off 15 Nebraska turnovers. The Huskers had 21 total points between second chance and Iowa turnovers.

And yet, when the final buzzer sounded on Senior Day in Iowa City, NU had more points on the scoreboard.

Nebraska (16-15, 9-11 Big Ten) beat Iowa 81-77. The win, paired with December’s 66-50 win in Lincoln, gives Big Red its first season sweep of the Hawkeyes since joining the Big Ten in 2011-12.

With other results earlier in the day, Nebraska was already eliminated from a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tournament. The Huskers will open tournament play Wednesday night in Chicago against Minnesota.

BIG RED BASEBALL SLIPS TO OLE MISS IN SUNDAY FINALE:

Nebraska concluded its weekend at the Cambria College Classic with a 14-5 loss to No. 4 Ole Miss at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Nebraska (5-4-1) had five runs on eight hits, while Ole Miss (10-2) totaled 14 runs on 14 hits.

The weekend overall was a success for the Big Red, as the Huskers took down Top Ten Vanderbilt and had a big win over Hawaii on Friday and Saturday in Minneapolis.

Nebraska continues play with a midweek series against Northern Colorado on Tuesday-Wednesday, March 7-8. First pitch of the home opener on Tuesday is set for 4:05 p.m. at Hawks Field.

STORM COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP OF STAMPEDE; WIN SIXTH IN A ROW:

The Tri-City Storm completed a two-game weekend sweep of the Sioux Falls Stampede Saturday at the Viaero Center in a 7-1 victory.

Tri-City extended its season-high winning streak to six games with the result. The Storm has notched points in the standings in seven consecutive games.

The Storm will return to action in back-to-back road games against the Des Moines Buccaneers next weekend.

Omaha redshirt junior Billy Higgins is the top-seed at 184 pounds, Kearney redshirt senior Lee Herrington is second at 285 lbs. with Kansas redshirt senior Austin Eldredge third at 174 lbs. NEBRASKA SOFTBALL FRESHMAN EARNS CONFERENCE AWARD:

Katelyn Caneda was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday following a big performance in the Huskers’ perfect 5-0 weekend at the Hillenbrand Invitational.

A Cerritos, Calif., native, Caneda produced three multi-hit games and tallied three extra-base hits. She finished the weekend 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles, one home run, five RBIs and four runs scored, averaging more than one hit and one RBI per game.

Caneda was crucial in Nebraska’s win over No. 16 Arizona. The freshman went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. She added her second home run of the season with a solo shot in the seventh inning to help the Huskers run past the Wildcats, 10-3.
